JAMES'. CHARLTON, 0F ALLEGHENY CITY, 'PENNSYLVANIA Letters Patent No. 76,603,dated April ilir, '1868; dntedated Aprilv 1, 1868.
IMPROVD RUBBER FORWASHING CLOTHES,
TO 'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Bel it' linolwnthat I, JAMES CHARLTON, ofthe city and county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand' useful Improvementin Rubber fo'r WashingClothe's and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making a rubber for washing clothes, said rubber being made in two parts, hinged together, and provided with a recess-and corrugated face, the whole being constructed, arranged,
and operating in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in thelart to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its iconstruction-and operation. In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improvcd'rubber for washing clothes.
Figure?, represents a transverse section, when cut through at line marked-rr. A l
In constructing my improved rubber for washing clothes, I use goed h'ard woodor any other suitable material, and form two pieces, A and A', 'of the shape shown in fig. 1. The pieces are hinged together as indicated at C, nud provided with a. corrugated face,f, and ree-ess e, as shown in iig. 2. B represents the handles of the rubber` The skillful mechanic will readily understand the construction of the rubber by reference to the drawings,.with- The clothes are caught between the pieces A land A', and by pressing together the handles B, will hold a portion of the' clothes in the recess e, which will prevent the clothes from slipping from between the pieces Ay and A. 'With the clothes thus held by pieces A and Atl1e operator then rubs 4the clothes on the ordinary wash-board, treating the clothes in the manner common to the Washing process. l
By means of this plain, simple, cheap, and durable device, the hands of the operator are saved from all abrasion of the skin so common to the washing process.
out further description', therefore I will proceed to describe its operation, which is as follows: v
Having' thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, is v A rubber for washing clothes, said rubber consisting of parts A andA, provided with handles B, andcorrugated facef, and hingedKtoget-her as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
l JAS. CHARLTON.
