Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 191e.
Application led March 15, 1915. Serial No. 14,581.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs CHEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State o f New Jersey, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Air-Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in air guns, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, and useful device for the purpose specified.
I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the device with the spring expanded, the side of the barrel being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view of the same with the spring compressed, and Fig. 3 is a view of the piston stem.
Similar characters refer to similar parts 1 throughout the several views.
My improved device comprises a barrel 1 in which is arranged a piston 2 provided with a rearwardly extending Hat stem 3. A bearing rivet or stop 4 is set in the barrel 1 and between the piston 2 and rivet 4 I pro# vide a coiled spring 5. The Hat stem 3 intermediate its ends is bent downward forming a shoulder 6. The posterior end section 7 of the stern 3 is preferably broader than the forward section and is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 and the extreme end section 9 of the stem 3 is bent downward at approximately a right angle. The barrel 1 is preferably constructed of sheet metal and has a downwardly extending lever section 10, in which a lever 11 is fulcrumed on a pivot 12.
The end section 13 of the lever 11 rests in the slot 8 in the end section 7 of the stem 3. Adjacent the stock 14 of the gun I provide a trigger 15 adapted to engage the downwardly bent end section 9 of the stem 3. The parts being thus assembled, the stem 3 is drawn back by drawing out the lever 11, the end section 13 of which will engage the stem 3 at the rear end of the slot 8 in which it rests, and thereby move the stem rearwardly to a point where its end section 9 will be engaged by the trigger 15 thereby compressing the spring 5 against the stop 4. The piston 2 is preferably secured upon the forward end of the stem 3 by inserting through a central aperture therein a rivet section 16 formed on the end of the stem 3 which is Hattened out against the outer face of the piston 2. The piston 2 is preferably constructed of leather, rubber or the like compressible material to fit closely within the barrel 1. The spring 5 being held in its compressed position by the stem 3 and trigger 15 as above described, the disengagement of the stem 3 and trigger 15 in the usual well known manner, will cause the spring 5 to expand and drive forward the piston 2 thereby compressing the air between the piston 2 and projectile 17 thereby expelling the latter from the gun in the usual manner.
j Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An air gun including a barrel, a trigger operative therein, a piston operative in the barrel, a stem secured to the piston, said stem having relatively offset forward and rear portions, connected by a relatively inclined portion, a spring encircling the forward part of the stem, the rear terminal of the rear part of the stem having a depending projection to be engaged by the trigger, and a lever pivotally supported on the gun and having a portion extending within the barrel and operating in a slot formed longitudin nally of the forward portion of thestem and throughout practically the full length of the inclined portion thereof.
2. An air gun including a barrel, a trigger operative therein, a piston operative in the barrel, a stem secured to the piston, said stem having relatively offset forward and rear portions, connected by a relatively inclined and operating in a slot formed longitudinally of the forward portion of the stem and throughout practically the full length of the inclined portion thereof, the lever having an angularly related terminal to engage in said slot, arranged approximately at right vangles to the inclined portion of the stem, whereby in the setting of the stem a limited relative movement between the stem and lever is permitted.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of twopvvitnesses.
