Description

M. D. GREENWOOD.
TOY PISTOL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16, 190B.
Patented May 4, 1909.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS :rns'r'wnms PETERS cm, uuwmcrorv. n. c
UNITED S ares TOY PISTOL.
Application filed June 16, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mans'rin GREEN- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hoosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy Pistol, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in toy pistols, and more particularly, to that type in which a resilient band is so arranged that when released, a projectile, such as a marble, a small stone or a bean, may be thrown.
()ne object of my invention is to hold the projectile in the barrel of the pistol and adj acent the plunger while the pistol is being aimed and to release the projectile simultaneously with the release of the plunger.
A further object is to simplify the mechanism for holding and operating the plunger which drives the projectile.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specific ation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a toy pistol constructed. in accordance with my invention, the pistol being ready for firing; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section similar to Fig. 1, but showing the parts as they appear after the discharge; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view, the parts being in the position indicated in Fig. 1.
In the specific construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I form the barrel of the pistol of a tube 10 of substantially uniform length and secured at its rear end to a stock or grip 11. The grip is provided with a cylindrical plug or projection 12, adapted to extend into the rear end of the tube to close the same, and is also provided with an extension or projection 13, engaging with the under side of the tube a short distance at the rear end to brace and reinforce the same. The tube forming the barrel is provided with a slot 14 extending along the top thereof, two oppositely disposed slots 15 in the sides thereof, and a slot or opening 16 in the lower side thereof. Vl ithin the barrel is a movable plunger 17 operated by a rubber band 18 extending through the side slots 15. The plunger is preferably provided with an opening 19 extending transversely therethrough and of a Width substantially equal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4-, 1909.
Serial No. 438,757.
to the width of the slot 15 and the width of the rubber band, and from the opening 19 to the forward end of the plunger, the latter is cut away to form side grooves 20. At the muzzle, a piece of wire is soldered to the under side of the barrel and extends upwardly to form two substantially parallel hooks or projections 21 upon opposite sides. The endless rubber band .18 is looped about one of the projections 21, extends through one of the slots 15 in the barrel, through the opening 19 in the plunger, out through the opposite slot 15, and. is looped about the opposite hook or projection 21.
For guiding the plunger and preventing any rotation thereof within the barrel, a guide in the form of a screw 22 is provided extending into the plunger intermediate its ends and extending up through the slot 14. The head of this screw when the plunger is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, may constitute a sight.
Secured to the under sideof the barrel and adapted to extend up through the slot or opening 16, are two separate springs 23 and 2 1. The siring 241 is provided with an inturned end 25, which is adapted to engage with the front end of the plunger and hold it in its rearward position with the band 18 stretched taut. Adjacent this spring is arranged a trigger 26 pivoted between lugs 27 carried by the barrel and having one end in engagement with the spring 25 adjacent its other end, so that by pulling on the trigger, the projection 25 is moved out of the barrel and out of the path of the plunger to release the latter. The spring 23 has one end thereof secured to the barrel adjacent the front end thereof, and is provided with aprojection 28 adapted to extend into the barrel at a short distance in advance of the projection 25. The terminal portion of the spring 23 lies adjacent the outer surface of the front end of the spring 2 1, so that when the lastmentioned spring is pulled down to release the plunger, as indicated in Fig. 2, the spring 23 will also be pulled down and out of the barrel and out of the path of the plunger. The projection 25 of the spring 24 serves to retain the plunger in position, as previously stated, while the projection 28 of the spring 23 serves to retain the projectile in position and adjacent the end of the plunger. The pulling of the trigger releases both the projectile and the plunger simultaneously. To facilitate the rearward movement of the plunger against the action of the tension means 18, said plunger is preferably provided With a transverse bar 29 in the rear of the opening 19 and extending out through. the slots 15 of the barrel. The rear end of the plunger at its lower side is preferably cut array or inclined to depress the two springs in succession as the plunger is pulled. bacl Ward, thus avoiding the necessity of depressing the springs by the action of the trigger.
As will be noted, the rubber band constituting the tension means, extends freely through the ope: i9 and. grooves 20 of the ilunger, and should it become Worn or ln'olien, a new band. may be very readily inserted Without employing any tools or instruments, and Without requiring the services of one particularly slilled.
The screw 22 serves not only to guide the plunger and prevent rotationv thereof and to limit the movement of said plunger, but also constitutes a sight. The stock or grip 11 serves not only to rigidly support the barrel but also serves to close the rear end thereof. The pulling on the trigger releases the plunger and the )rojectile simultaneously, so that the piston may be employed in shooting rear end or the barrel, a second spring having downwardly as Well as upwardly.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A toy pistol having a barrel, a plunger movable therein, a spring having a projection extending into said barrel and adapted I first-mentioned spring withdraws the secondto retain the plunger adjacent the rear end of the barrel, a second spring having a pro-- jection extending into the barrel and adapted to retain projectile adjacent the end of the 3 springs, and means whereby the withdrawing or said hrst-inentloned spring Withdraws the z opposite sides, a plunger Within said barrel and having an opening therethrough, and grooves in the sides thereof extending from the opening to the front end of said plunger, hooks adjacent the muzzle of said barrel and upon opposite sides thereof, and an elastic band extending from one of said hooks through the slots in the barrel and the opening in the plunger, into engagement with the opposite hook.
3. A toy pistol comprising a barrel having slots in the opposite sides thereof, a slot in the upper side thereof, and slot in the lower side thereoi', means extending through the inst-mentioned slots lor reciprocating said plunger, a combined guide and stop extending through said. top slot for limiting the movement of said plunger, and means ere tending througl'i the bottom slot for retaining the plunger adjacent the rear end of the barrel and retaining a projectile adjacent thereto.
i. A toy pistol, comprising a barrel, a
plunger movable therein, a spring secured to the under side of said barrel and havin a b pro ection extending into said barrel and adapted to retain the plunger ad acent the a projection extending into the barrel in front i. the first-mentioned projection and adapted to retain a projectile adjacent the end of the plunger, one end of said second spring extending adjacent the first-mentioned spring, and means whereby the Withdrawal of the mentioned spring.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
