Specification of Letters Patent.
CHAIR ATTACHMENT.
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,453.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SHERIDAN E. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winslow, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chair Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chair attachments and more particularly to means for adjustably connecting a table to an ordinary chair.
The principal object of the invention is to provide simple, inexpensive and efficient means for attaching a table to a chair in such manner that it may be adjusted vertically or horizontally to suit the desires of the occupant.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying, drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair with the attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the table standard in section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the collar. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the supporting frame. P
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein, I have shown an ordinary straight back chair with the numeral 1 indicating the supporting legs thereof. Attached to one of the supporting legs 1 is a bracket generally indicated at 2 and which consists of a body having a pair of hooked arms 3 and a laterally extended ear 4 in which is threaded a clamping screw has pivotally connected to its upper end a top supporting frame 11 to which is secured the top 12. The bolt 13 which pivotally connects the frame to the standard also secures the inner and lower end of the brace 1 1 extending diagonally from the standard to the table top where it is permanently or otherwise secured.
Adjustably mounted upon the standard and arranged to limit its downward movement in the bearing member 7 is a collar 15 which is held in adjusted position by a set screw 16 and which is provided with an outwardly-and downwardly extending finger 17 sharpened upon its lower edge to engage the notches in the upper surface of the segment 8.
The head 18 on the standard 10, the adjacent end of the brace 14. and the head 19 on the frame 11 are serrated as shown at 20, so that when held against lateral movement by the bolt 18 the serrations will resiliently engage each other owing to the angularly relation of the brace frame and standard and will as a result hold the parts in proper adjusted positions against accidental displacement. By loosing the bolt 13 a certain degree the serrations will be allowed to resiliently pass over each other so that the table top 12 may assume various positions.
Raising or lowering the collar 15 on the standard controls the height of the table with respect to the bracket while the finger 18 engages the notches to prevent accidental rotation of the standard and holds the same in adjusted, rotary position.
lVhat is claimed is e A device of the class described comprising a table top, a rotatably mounted vertical standard having its upper end formed with an opening and two sets of teeth arranged on opposite sides of the standard and concentrically of the opening, a frame having a horizontal portion secured to said top and a vertical portion the free end of which being formed'with an opening and a series of teeth arranged concentrically of the opening and arranged to engage one set of the teeth of said standard, and a brace arranged at an angle to said vertical portion and hav- Patented May so, 1916.
