Description

H. A. COCHRAN.
GAS BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 2.1914.

WITNESSES: M/VEN TOR UNIT j OFFICE" l HARRY A. oocnnnn, or HOUS'DOETEXAS, nss'renon TO AMERICAN AUTOMATIC WATER HEATER 0 0., n CORPORATION or ARIZONA. I
. ensoniface.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. CooHRAN, a citizen of the, United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, ofwhich the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas burners.
The object of this invention is to provide a burner of the character described which'is specially adapted to be used in connection with water heaters, and other heating apparatus, and is so constructed as to prevent back firing and is also so formed that it may be placed to one side of the heating coil, rather than underneath it, so that the liquid which condenses on the coil will not fall on the burner.
The flame from gas burners now in most common use extends directly upwardly from the burner so that said burner must be placed directly underneath the coil to be heated and the water and moisture which condenses on the coil falls upon the burner and injures the same. The flame from the burner herein described issues through the discharge opening in a forward direction so be placed at one side of the same from the that said burner can the coil and be eifective in heating and at the same time be protecte moisture falling from the coil.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a construction which will prevent the flashing or back-firing of the burner, as will be hereinafter set forth.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the burner, illustrating an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same on the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper portion of the burner with the cap plate removed, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line b-b of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral l refers to the tubular Specification of Iietters Patent.

body .orshell, as-used in connection with a gasandair mixer of the ordinary type. The shell surrounds a supply passage 2 for gas and air and is flared slightly at its lower end, wh1ch isopen for the admission of air and into which a gas supply pipe 3 projects.
The upper portion of the body 1 is enlarged,
a's-at 4, forming a dischargechamber, which, as shown in Fig. 13,is rectangular in cross section and is entirely open above.
, A perforated diaphragm-5,-which is pref- ..erably formed of wire gauze, is fitted over the open end of the discharge chamber and is held in a substantially transverse position thereto by a cap plate 6, of similar contour to the discharge chamber, between which plate and discharge chamber the diaphragm is clamped by the screws 7. It should be stated that the diaphragm declines slightly forwardly. The underside of the cap plate is concaved, or hollowed out, so as to maintain a space 8 between the cap plate and the diaphragm, as shown in Fig. 2 and a slot 9 extends across the cap plate, forming an'oblong discharge opening and said cap plate has an over hanging flange 10 in the rear of said discharge opening which deflects the blaze issuing from the discharge opening forwardly, and this flange is extended for- 9 and an unbroken flame is thrown out upwardly through said discharge opening and deflected laterally and forwardly by the flange 10 against the heating coil and the burner will thus be eflicient in'heating the coil without being placed thereunder, so that the water which is condensed on or may leak from the heating coil will not fall on the burner and find its way through the joint between the discharge chamber and cap plate and injure the interposed diaphragm.
The construction of the burner as hereinbefore described will also prevent any back firing, that is, the mixture in the supply passage 2 cannot become ignited from the flame issuing from inasmuch as the cap plate 6 declines at such a small angle and the flame, while it is deflected forwardly, it is also deflected upthe discharge opening 9, p
wardly and'there is no liability'of its passing downwardly and into the air ways at the lower end of the shell 1. 7
What I claim is 1. The combination with a gas and air mixing chamber, chamber, a direct passageway said mixing chamber with said discharge chamber, a foraminous diaphragm arranged" angularly relative to the discharge chamber and extending across the end ofsaid chamher, a cap plate secured to the discharge chamber above the diaphragm and having an oblong slot forming a discharge opening therethrough, and a deflector arranged above and extending angularly over said opening. I e
2."The combination with a gas and-air mixingchamber, of an'enlarged discharge copies'of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
s a e obliquely relative thereto, of an expanded discharge connecting." [diaphragm and chamber commlin'icating with said mixing chamber and having an open end, a foraminous diaphragm extending across the HARRY A. COCHRAN.
