Be it known that I, EARL J. Emmi,

a citizen ofthe United Statesyand resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State ofRhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-l lountings, of which the following is a specification. c

This invention relates to means for "attaching bearing pads to eye-glass mount,- ings, and has for its object toprovide: a cross-bar in the guard plate and a bearing pad having an integral tongue looped loosely around said bar, whereby a universal rocking motion of the pad is obtained.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a deep notch on the edge of the guard at the point where the bearing pad is attached andqan opening a short distance inward from the bottom of said notch thereby providing a bar between the two openings, by which construction the tongue on the bearing pad may be previouslv'bent into the form of an open-mouthed hook and then positioned on the guard while in such shape rendering it only necessary to bend the tongue over slightly to cause its free end to pass through the second opening and firmly lock the pad in position on the guard.

With these and other obiects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction; as will be morefully described and particularly pointed. out in the appended claim;

Referring to thedrawings, 1 designates the lenses supported between the straps 2,

which straps are joined together by the bridge member On this bridge member is plvotally mounted the guard arms 4 to the outer end of each of which is attached the nose guard plate 5. This guard plate may be made iniany suitable or desired shape T illustrated in Fig. 2 to stand substantially in an upright position. The body portion is comparatively narrow and has an enlarged roughened engaging surface 6 at its lower end, and an enlarged concavo-convex surface 7 substantially circular in outline at the upper or opposite end but I do not wish from sheet metal, but is preferably made as end only. Theportion to which this pad is attached is provided with a deep notch 8 at its outer edge and also an opening 9 through it a short distance inward from the bottom of said notch thereby providing a bar substantially vertically disposed;

' The bearing pad 11, see Fig. 4, is constructed of an elongated body portionhaving a tongue 12 formed integral therewith, the edge of the pad being out inward a short distance to allow the tongue when bent to extend outward from the rear near the center of the plate. A roughened facing 13 of celluloid, tortoise shell, or other suitable material may be attached to the front surface of the pad, by rivets or other suitable means. In attaching this pad to the nose guard member the tongue 12 is first turned outward and then into a hook form with its 10, said free end resting against the rear face of the pad.

A feature of the invention is the construetion whereby the tongue on the bearing pad, which is formed integral therewith, may be first bent into a hook form before it is positioned on the guard, therebynecessitating but a slight bend with a hammer or a small pair of pliers in order to attach -it permanently in position on the guard.

Then again, when it is desired to remove and replace thlspadwith anotherstyle or size, by my improved construction, it is not necessary to send it back to the factory, as any Optician or mechanic can easily open the hook with, a pair of pliers and remove the pad fromthe guard. This change could not be accomplished if the pads were riveted in position on the guard.

I claim: y In an eye-glass mounting, a guard arm,

a nose guard mounted on said arm and provided with an opening through it near its center and adeep notch on its edge forming a. bar between, a rocking pad having a single integral tongue bent into a substantially hook form setinto said notch and looped loosely around said bar whereby a universal rocking motion of the pad on the guard is obtained.
