To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire, State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

The invention relates to holders.

The invention more particularly designs to provide a detachable eye -glass holder, which is provided with a guard which automatically prevents the glasses from becoming detached from the holder, under certain conditions.

The invention further designs to provide an eye-glass holder having a guard which operates automatically to keep the glasses on the holder, should the wearer stoop or bend down.

The invention further designs to provide a new and improved form of holder.

The invention consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device embodying the invention, when it is in upright position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, when it is in inclined position.

Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line l 1 of Fig. 1.

The device comprises a detachable holder 10 which consists of a hook portion 11 and a pin fastener of the safety pin type 12, comprising a pin 13 which is adapted to be sprung into engagement with the notch 14:. The upright portion of the fastener, adjacent its upper end, carries bracket 15 with bent up extremities 16, in which are journaled the ends 17 of a guard 18. The guard 18 comprises a transverse member 19, a pair of members or arms 20 depending therefrom and spaced apart, so that the upper portion of the hook 11 is spaced therebetween. The guard 18 carries a stop 21 secured to it at one end, the other end being designed to contact with the upper end of the pin 12, to limit the movement of the guard. The operation of the device is as follows: The holder is attached to the wearer, by securing the pin in the usual way. The eye glasses may then be secured to the holder,

' by securing them to the hook in any well known manner. Now, stoop down or bend over, hook to such an extent would, due to'gravity, or any ordinary circumstances,'be released therefrom and fall, the pivoted guard 18 will assume a vertical position due to the action of gravity, and the depending arms of the guard being disposed adjacent the open end of the hook, will close the end and prevent the glasses from being detached therefrom, the movement of the guard being limited by the stop 21.

The invention thus exemplifies a holder which has been described as particularly that the glasses should the wearer f so as to incline the adapted for holding eye-glasses, but it is obvious that the used may be employed in connection with any hook-like member for securing an article, and which may be tilted.

The invention is not to be restricted to the details of construction may be varied so as to of the appended claims.

What I claim is: V

1. An eye-glass holder comprising a fastener to secure it to the wearer, means for securing a pair of eyeglasses thereto, and a freely movable guard which is normally inoperative to permit the removal of the glasses from the securing means and which automatically prevents the release of the glasses from the securing means when the wearer stoops over and varies the position of the fastener.

2. Aneye-glass holder comprising a detachable fastener to secure it to the wearer, a hook for detatchably securing a pair of glasses to the fastener, a gravity actuated guard for said hook which is normally in operative to permit the removal of the glasses from the hook and which is automatically operative to prevent the release of the glasses from the hook when the wearer stoops over and varies the position of the fastener.

8. An eye-glass holder comprising a detachable fastener to secure it to the wearer, a hook for detachably securing a pair of glasses to the fastener, a freely movable guard pivotally secured to the fastener adj acent said hook and having depending arms adapted to be disposed on either side of the hook and beyond the same, and means for be within the scope herein set forth, but
