J AMES HIGKEY, OF GASTLETON, KANSAS.
SNAP-=HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 35 6,467, dated January 25, 1887. Application filed August 14, 1886. Serial No. 210,897. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMEs HIcKEY, of Oastleton, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Side-Action Snaps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved, novel, and simplified harness snap-hook, whereby the tongue of the same has a side action to permit of the operation of the same from either side, as also to admit of the automatic unlocking of the said tongue, when desired.
Tothese ends myimprovement consists, essentially, of a suitable snap-hook frame having a tongue pivoted therein, with its' lower square end in operative relation with an elongated spring located within a groove in the said frame, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel represents a front elevation of a snap-hook embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a similar View with parts broken away to more fully show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
In carrying out my invention the frame of the snap-hook is preferably composed ofa rectangular base, A, having a loop, B, formed integral with its lower portion, and an upwardlyextending hook, G, asshown. At the upper portion of the base A, and extending lengthwise for the greater part of the same, is provided a deep groove or slot, a, adapted to receive a spring rod or bar, I), slightly raised or curved at its center. The tongue D is pivoted within the said groove or slot a,near its center, in such manner that when the said tongue stands in a vertical position the square base of the said tongue rests flat upon the top of the spring (2, and is held in its vertical position thereby, the upper end of the tongue abutting against the end of the hook O, as shown. At suitable distances apart, and upon each side of the lower portion of the tongue D, is provided a lug or stop, 0, to control the movement of the tongue within a given space, and to insure of its being sprung back to its vertical position when in a state of rest. J
' It will .be observed that the tongue Dean be readily drawn back on either side to permit ofthe engagement of the book 0 with other portions of the harness, and at the same time can be readily released by a sudden pull to either side Without employing the hands to pull the tongue to one side, as is the case with the snap-hooks generally employed for similar purposes.-
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful The herein-described snap-hook, consisting of the angular base A, having an integral loop, B, and hook O, and provided with the groove a, springb, and stops 0, in combination with the tongue D, having an angular shank and pivoted to base ofhook O, and adapted to swing 'sidewise against the tension of spring I), all arranged and operating substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HIOKEY.
