To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. GUNDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lone Rock, in the county of Richland and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Lamp Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is an improved extinguisher for use in connection with the burner of an ordinary coal oil lamp and by means of which a lamp may be instantly extinguished when desired, without the necessity of blowing down into the chimney and inhaling the disagreeable smoke and odor from the burner, the object of the invention being to provide an improved extinguisher which is extremely cheap and simple, may be readily attached to an ordinary lamp burner and which is operated by the wick raiser.

The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

1n the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a lamp burner of ordinary form provided with an extinguisher constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the extinguisher in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same with a part of the dome removed, to show the extinguisher.

Theburner here shown is of the usual form, having a gallery 1, a removable dome 2, a wick tube 3 and a wickraiser shaft 4 provided at its outer end with a milled head 5 whereby it may be turned.

In accordance with my invention I provide an extinguisher 6 which is secured and arranged on the cranked portion 7 of a crank shaft 8 which shaft has bearings as at 9 in opposite sides of the dome and is provided at one end with an arm 10 which has a wrist 11. The extinguisher may be moved to a point immediately over and to close down upon the upper end of the wick tube, to extinguish the flame, by partly turning the shaft in one direction, and may be moved to one side of the upper end of the wick tube, clear from the flame, to avoid interference with the flame by turning the shaft in the reverse direction.

To operate the extinguisher shaft I provide a vertically movable bar 12 which operates in a guide opening 13 in one side of the gallery and also in a guide 14L which is attached to and arranged below the gallery. This bar 12 is provided on one side with rack teeth 15 adapted to engage the teeth of a pinion 16 on the shaft 1. On the upper end of the bar is an eye 17 with which the wrist 11 of the extinguisher crank shaft is loosely engaged, and a coiled spring 18 is also arranged around the upper portion of said rack bar.

When the wick raiser shaft is turned in a clockwise direction required to raise the wick, the pinion by engagement with the rack teeth of the bar 12 moves said bar downwardly hence turning the shaft 8 and arranging the extinguisher to one side of the upper end of the wick tube, out of the way. The rack teeth extend through only a portion of the length of the bar and when said rack bar is down to the limit of its length a pinion is out of engagement with the teeth of the bar. The spring 18 is not of suflicient strength to turn the pinion but by bearing on the gallery it holds the teeth of the bar in position to be engaged by the pinion when the wick raiser is turned in a counter clockwise direction to operate the extinguisher. The loose connection between the shaft 8 and the bar 12, afforded by the eye 17 in which the wrist 11 is arranged enables the wick to be adjusted as desired without interference by the extinguisher, and also enables the dome to be detached, and thus facilitates cleaning of the burner. This is accomplished by applying pressure to the eye 17 forcing the bar down against the tension of the spring 18 disengaging the teeth on the pinion, thereby allowing the wick to be raised and cleaned and then lowered without the extinguisher interfering with the same.

While I have herein shown and described a preferred form .of my invention, I would Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a lamp burner having a gallery, a dome, a wick tube and a wick raising shaft, an extinguisher, a crank shaft having bearings in the dome and to the crank of which shaft the extinguisher is attached, said crank shaft also having an arm at one end provided with a wrist, a pinion on the wick raising shaft and a vertically movable rack bar guided by the gallery,

' adapted to engage the pinion and connected tached, said crank shaft also having an arm at one end provided with a wrist, a pinion on the wick raising shaft and a vertically movable rack bar guided by the gallery, adapted to engage the pinion and connected to the wrist, said rack bar having an eye at its upper end in which the wrist is loosely arranged, and being also provided with a spring at its upper end adapted to bear on the gallery when said rack bar is at the lower limit of its movement.
