Description

PATENTED NOV. 12, 1907.
E. M. LOFTUS. GAS BURNER. APPLICATION rum) Nov. 23,1906.
EDWARD M. LOFTUS, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed November 23.1906- Serial No. 344,726-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. Lorrus, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Gas-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners and more particularly to automatic cut offs for the same, the object being to provide the burner with an automatic cut off that will cut off the flow of gas when the flame is extinguished accidentally, such as being blown out by an ignorant person or by the wind.
This invention consists essentially in providing a gas burner with a casing in which a thermostatic frame is arranged to which is connected a cut off bar working in the bore of the plug, which is adapted to hold the cut off open when the gas is burning and to close the same when the gas is extinguished.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved burner. Fig. 2 is an enlargecLvertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing A indicates an ordinary gas bracket provided with an upwardly extending threaded stem A at its end on which is screwed the threaded socket B of a plug B which is provided with a bore B and a cut out portion B A tube C is arranged over the plug B provided with a cut away portion 0 over the cut out portion B of the plug B. An ordinary burner tip 0 is arranged in the end of the tube C which extends up above the end of the plug B.
Secured to one side of the tube C is a casing D in which is arranged a thermostatic frame F carrying a bar G which works in a slot B in the plug and slot C of the tube and is provided with an opening G, adapted to register with the bore B of the plug. The end of the bar extends into the cut out portion of the plug and is provided with an opening G in which the re duced end H of the lever H is arranged which is pivoted in the cut out portion of the plug above the cut away portion of the tube so that by pressing on the lever through the opening in the tube the opening in the bar Will register with the bore B of the plug and allow the flow of gas to pass to the burner so that it can be ignited and it will be readily seen that the heat will cause the thermostatic frame to expand and hold the same in an opened position, but if the gas should be extinguished accidentally the thermostatic frame would contract and draw the bar over the bore of the plug and cut off the fiow'of gas.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel and simple and cheap burner which can be easily and quickly ignited and one which is very effective in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. In a gas burner, the combination with a plug provided with a bore'and a cut out portion, of a tube arranged over said plug carrying a gas tip, a casing secured to said tube a thermostatic frame arranged in said casing carrying a cut off bar working in a slot in the plug and tube and a lever pivoted in the cut out portion of the plug connected to said out off bar for the purpose described.
2. In a gas burner, the combination With a plug having a bore and a cut out portion, of a tube arranged over said plug provided with a cutaway portion, a gas tip arranged in said tube, a casing secured to one side of, said tube, a thermostatic frame arranged in said casing, a cut oil bar provided with an opening connected to said ,frame working in a slot in said plug, and tube, and a lever pivoted in the cut out portion of the plug connected to said out 01f bar, for the purpose described.
3. In a gas burner, the combination with a plug provided with a vertical bore, and a transverse slot terminating in a cut out portion, of a tube arranged over said plug provided with a casing, a thermostatic frame arranged in said casing, a cut off bar secured to said frame extending through said slot into said out out portion, provided with an opening at its end, and an opening adapted to register with the vertical bore of the plug and a lever pivoted to the tube in said out out portion of the plug, provided with a reduced end working in the opening in the end of the cut off bar, for the purpose described.
EDWARD M. LOFTUS.
