CONVERTIBLE KITCHEN-TABLE, IRONING-BOARD, QUILTING-FRAME, AND CLOTHES- RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application filed September 25, 1914. Serial No. 863,530.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. HAPPY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pinckneyville, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Kitchen- Tables, Ironing-Boards, Quilting-Frames, and Clothes-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved article of furniture which may be used either as a kitchen table, an ironing board, a quilting frame or a clothes rack and which may be readily converted from one such article to another, the object of the invention being to provide an improved article of furniture of this kind which is cheap and simple in construction, is strong and durable, which may be readily set up and which may be readily converted.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of furniture embodying my invention showing the same arranged for use as a table and as a clothes rack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same arranged for use as an ironing table. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same arranged for use as a quilting frame. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are detail views.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide four corner posts 1, these posts are connected together in pairs by bars 2 and the ends of which are here shown as mortised to the upper ends of the corner posts. Said bars have longitudinal grooves 3 on their inner sides and are provided near their ends with transverse bearing openings 4. One of the bars 2 is also provided with a trans verse opening 5 in which is a lock pin 6 the outer end of which is provided with a finger piece 7 and is connected to one end of a spring 8, said spring being connected at the other end as at 9 to the said bar and being attached to project the pin from the inner side of said bar.
When the device is arranged for use as a table or as an ironing table as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bars 2 constitute side bars of the table frame. Two of the legs 1 are also longitudinally adjusted and may also be arranged at any desired angle with respect to each other. Each bar 14: has a knob or linger piece 15 at its outer end whereby it may be drawn out, pushed in or otherwise adjusted and each bar is also provided with a stop pin 16 at its inner end.
The posts are connected to the bars 2 by braces 17. Each post has on its inner side a transverse rabbet 18 at its lower end and a similar rabbet 19 at a suitable distance from its lower end. Upper and lower bars 2021 are provided which respectively have rabbets 2223 providing projections 24-25 to respectively fit in the rabbets 1918 and thus enable said bars to be detachably secured between the pairs of posts at the ends of the frame when the device is used either as a table or as an ironing table. Bolts 26, which have winged nuts 27 are provided to detachably secure said bars to the posts.
Each bar 2021 is provided also with a vertical centrally arranged rabbets 28 adapt ed to be engaged with one of the rabbets 1.8 19. The upper bars 20 are also provided with bearing openings 29 and with recesses 30 to receive ends of sectional rollers 31 as hereinafter described and to support said rollers out of the way when the device is used either as a table or as an ironing table.
A table top 32 is provided which is detachably arranged to fit between the bars 2 or between the posts 1 and has reinforcing cleat bars 33 in grooves in its under sides near its ends and the ends of which cleats project beyond the same and form projections 34 which are adapted to be engaged with the grooves 3 of the bars 2 to support the table top between the said bars and at the top of the frame, when the device is to be used as a table, as shown in Fig. 1. To hold the table top securely in place, preventing it from casually sliding, and yet adapted to be readily removed when desired, the table top is provided with an opening 35 in one side for engagement by the pin 6. When the device is not for use as a table the top may be removed from between the bars 2 and arranged between the corner posts and to bear on the upper cross bars 20.
To enable the device to be used as an ironing table I provide an ironing board 36 which corresponds in dimensions with the removable table top 32 is shaped as required to facilitate its use as an ironing board and is provided at suitable points with a suitable number of transversely arranged cleat bars 37 the ends of which project beyond the said sides of the ironing board and are adapted to be engaged with the grooves 3 to slidably support the ironing board between the bars 2 and thereby enable the ironing board to be arranged in place, removed, or adjusted as desired. The ironing board is provided with a suitable number of adjusting openings 38 any one of which may be engaged by the pin 6 to hold the ironing board in adjusted position. The ironing board and the table top are interchangeable and either of them may be arranged at will at the top of the frame or on the bars 20, out of the way. When one is used at the top of the frame the other may be used as a shelf below it as will be understood.
Each roller 31 used when the device is arranged as a quilting frame, comprises a pair of members 89 of equal length each of which has a spindle 40 at one end and a scarf 41 at the opposite end. The scarfs, when the members are arranged end to end, overlap and form coupling joints between the members and the members are further secured together when used by means of bolts 42 which pass through their overlapping scarfs. When the device is used as a table, ironing table, or rack the members of the rollers are disconnected and each roller member has its spindle 40 arranged in one of the openings 29 of one of the upper bars 10 and its scarf 41 arranged in one of the recesses 30 of the other bar 20. One member of each roller is provided near its spindle with radially arranged securing devices 43 which are here shown as screw eyes.
To use the device as a quilting frame the table top and ironing board must be removed, the bars 2021 disconnected at their ends from the posts and the bar 10 also disconnected from the posts so that each bar of the posts together with one of the bars 2 may be caused to constitute an end member for the quilting frame. are then rearranged and secured to the lower ends of the posts with their rabbets 28-30 engaged in the rabbets 18 of the posts, so that each of said bars forms a transverse, horizontal, supporting foot at the lower end The bars 2021' of one of the posts, the said bars being secured in such adjusting position by means of the bolts 26 and their winged nuts 27.
The sectional rollers having been extended and jointed as before described their spindles 40 are mounted in the bearing openings 4 of the bars 2. Hooks 44 are provided which are connected to two of the posts 1 and which may be engaged with any of the screw eyes 43 of either of the rollers so that the rollers may be secured against rotation, and when the hook is disengaged from one of said rollers said roller may be turned as required to adjust or stretch the quilt.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A convertible structure of the class described comprising two pairs of posts, bars permanently attached to the upper ends of the posts and connecting them in pairs, said bars forming a support for the top when the structure is arranged as a table, cross bars constructed for attachment to the posts at right angles to the first-named bars and also for attachment to the posts, at the lower ends of the posts and for arrangement parallel with the first-named bars, means to secure said cross bars to the posts in either of such positions, and rollers for arrangement either parallel or at right angles to the first-named bars, said rollers and said first-- named bars and cross bars being provided with means to secure said rollers in either of such positions.
2. A convertible structure of the class described comprising two pairs of posts, bars permanently attached to the upper ends of the posts and connecting them in pairs, said bars forming a support for the top, when the. structure is arranged as a table, cross bars constructed for attachment to the posts at right angles to the first-named bars and also for attachment to the posts, at the lower ends of the posts and for arrangement par allel with the first-named bars, means to secure said cross bars to the posts in either of such positions, and rollers for arrangement either parallel or at right angles to the first-named bars, said rollers and said first-named bars and cross-bars being provided with means to secure said rollers in either of-such positions, each of said members comprising detachably secured sections, and the means for securing said rollers to the first-named bars also enabling said rollers to be rotated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. HAPPY.
