DOOR-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed July 7, 1915. Serial No. 38,513.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED ARNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bainbridge township, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to door stops, and more particularly to the class of adjustable door checks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a door check of this character wherein a swinging door can be held fast either closed, opened, or in an adjusted position therebetween.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a check of this character wherey bination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door showing the check constructed in accordance wlth the invention in position for holding the door fast. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the check. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a door, which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and is mounted for swinging movement, while B is the door check hereinafter fully described.
The door check B comprises a substantially rectangular shaped plate 5, preferably made from rigid material, formed with a bifurcation 6 which is centrally located longitudinally therein, while at opposite sides of the bifurcation and bent from the plate are pintle sleeves 7 in which is received a pintle 8 in the form of a bolt member, the same being also passed eccentrically through a cam segment 9 formed at its periphery with a plurality of spur teeth 10, and also formed with a lever 11 so that the segment 9 can be readily turned for the bringing of the teeth 10 into biting engagement with the floor or sill of the frame for the door.
In the use of the door check the plate is inserted between the sill or the floor and the lower edge of the door, whether it be closed, opened, or at an intermediate adjusted point, and on the swinging of the lever 11 in one direction the segment 9 will be turned so as to bring the peripheral teeth 10 into biting engagement with the sill or floor and thereby firmly locking the door in its closed, opened, or adjusted position, so that there will be no possibility of the accidental freeing of the door when the door check is in use. To release the check the lever 11 is moved in the reverse direction, which turns the segment 9 so that the teeth 10 thereon will disengage from the sill or flooring so that the plate 5 can be removed from be tween the sill or floor and the lower edge of the door.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1- A door check comprising a rectangular shaped plate having a beveled end edge and also having a bifurcation in the opposite end to provide a fork with pintle sleeves, a pintle engaged in the sleeves, a cam segment eccentrically mounted on the pintle and working in the fork, tangentially disposed teeth at the periphery of the segment, and a lever formed on the segment.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT ARNT.
