IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117 ,888, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known th at we, HoMER H. INGALsBE, of South Hartford, and GUsTAvUs A. PEEsooTT, of Sandy Hill, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Pruning Trees; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an implement for priming trees, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the anneXed drawing, which represents a side view of my pruning-tool.
A represents the cuttingjaw, pivoted to the stationary jaw B. This stationary jaw Bis s'ecured to the staif D, and the cutting-jaw A is, by a rod, C, connected with the operating-lever E, pivoted to the staff. The cutting-jaw A is constructed in such a manner that a line connecting the fulcrurn a with the point b where the rod O is attached shall be nearly at right angles to the cuttngedge, and the said fulcrum t is placed upon the stationary jaw B at a convenient distance from and nearly at right angles with the edge of said jaw for the purpose of allowing the knife to be worked by the straight rod O, which runs up parallel and close to the staff. The rod O is confined to the staff D through its whole length by staples d or other suitable means so that they shall mutually sustain and support each other. The lever E is constructed, as shown, with two fulcrums, c and f, and is so arranged as to change fulcrums in the middle of the stroke.
The lever E is provided with two curved slots, e j', through which the fulcrums c j' are inserted, and it will be noticed that the lever turns first upon one fulcrum to about the middle of the stroke, then changes and turns upon the other to complete the stroke.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The lever E, constructed as set forth, in combination with the rod O, staff D, and jaws A B, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The lever E for operating the cutting-jaw, when said lever is provided with two fulcrums and so constructed as to change fulcrums in the middle of the stroke, substantially as herein set forth.
