IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,863, dated August 8, 1871.
To all 'whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS CHEsNUTwooD, of Davidsville, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Eye-Protector, Fan, and Mirror; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of vertical section of my invention.
This invention has relation to an improved screen or eye-shade to protect the eye from the rays of a bright light. It may be also used as a fan, and is furnished with a mirror for toilet use. The novelty consists in arranging the screen in a stand containing a spring, for the purpose of elevating said screen, and furnished with an adjustin g-screw to regulate the height.
Iteferrin g to the accompanying drawing, Arepresents an ornamented stand, to be placed on a table or other suitable receptacle. Through the center of this stand is formed a vertical channel, b, containing a spiral spring, B. C represents a rod which iits into said chamber. D represents an ornamental or fan-shaped screen, in one side `be of any convenient size.
of which is set a small mirror, E. Thisv screen is secured to the upper end of the rod C, and may It is designed, when used in connection with the stand A, as a protector for the eyes, being placed toward a light and adj usted to the proper height. It is lowered by being pressed down, and raised by means of the springB. Athumb-screw, F, inserted through the side ofthe stand A, serves as a means of securing the rod which holds the screen, and through it the screen itself, in any position. By removing the screen and rod from the stand a fan is provided in every way adapted to use, and of neat and attractive design. The mirror may be used for any suitable purpose.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described automatically-adjustable screen, consisting of the tubular stand A, spring B, rods C, fan or screen D, and set-screw F, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I h. ve hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
