sists in the construction and'combination of j various parts of. the machine, as hereinafter morefully described.
Afrepresents the she1f,.shelves, or closet of the dumb-waiter, whichmov'es up and down upon ways B, attached tothe frame or casing O of the well, in which the waiter is. placed.
To the top of the shelf orbox Ais attached one end of arope, D, which passes overapul- 'ley,'E, pivoted in .the upper part of the well,
and. its other endfis attached to the weight F,
that balancesthe-shelf or shelves A, and which moves up and down in a well chamber or space I at theback or side of the well or chamber in which the said shelf or shelves move.
To the lower end of the weight F is attached one end of the rope G, which passes around a pulley, H, in the lower part of the well, and

this construction 'a person in the upper part.
of the building may raise and lower the waiter by operating the upper rope, and a person in the lower part of the building may raise and lower it by operatingthe lower rope.
I are right-angled levers, which are pivotedand drop into a notch or catch, L, formedin said edge, so as to stop and hold the said closet until-released by again operating the rod J'.
The levers I K are held imposition to catch upon the notch or catch L by the weight of the rod I, assisted, when necessary, by one, or more.
springs, M, connected with the rod I or levers J, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ,11. The combination of the rope G and pulley H. with the shelf, shelves, or closet A, rope D, pulley E, and weight F, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, andfor the purpose set forth.
