.RICHARD MURDOCH, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Leners Patent No. 10s,9s0,daaa'November1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT lN SHELVING FOR -STORES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-knownvthat I, RIeHARDllIUnnocn, of Baltimore, in the county ot' Baltimore and State oi' 'Maryland, have invented a new and improved Shelving forl Stores; and I do hereby declare theV following to bc a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part same, in order that the surfaces ot' the walls may -be utilized for shelving clear to the ceilings.
lhe invention consists ot' upper sections ot shelving made movable vertically, so Vthat the salesman may draw thc goods down to himself instead of' going up to the goods, each movable section ot' shelving being provided with a counterl'mlance, or one section being hung,- in opposition to another, and latch mechanisms being provided for the purpose ot' preventing a section of shelving, as itsweight decreases byreason of the removal otgoods therefrom, from being drawn upward by the counterbalancc before the salesman is readyto let it risc.
Referring to thc drawing- A is a case containing shelves divided into innnovable sections a.
bfarc movable sections of shelves ruiming in grooves in the inner sides ofthe case A, and extending in front of the same,
The sections b are each connected, as shown in fig. 2, by cords c, running over sheaves d hung-to; the top et' the case A,.wi'th an arm, 0,. that extends upward, in rear ofthe sh elves a, from a counter-weight, f, which may be either" solid or may consist of a vessel for containing liquids.
By-means of the counter-weights f the sections I) may be raised to the top of tl1ecasc,so as not to cover the `front of the vsections 11. A
When the salesman has occasion to exhibit goods .stored in either of the upper sections of. shelving, hc
has simply todraw the same down to within reach.
For drawing' the" "sections I) down, two dite'rent mechanismsv are shown. One mechanism consists of the bar h, fig. 1, which hangs horizontally below the section a, being connected therewith by cords 0', and serving as a handle.
A cord, 1.-, is also attached tothe barh, and, passing through an eye, l, in the bottom of the section b, is attached at its'other extremity to a latch, m, that is pivotcd to the back side ofthe section, and is pressed, by a spring, n, into a notch formed iu the inner side et' the case A. l
When thc section is drawn down the latch m holds 0n pulling the bar h, the cord 7c withdraws the latch from its notch, so that it presents no obstacle to the descent otthc section.
The second mechanism consists ol'a lever, o, iig. 1, pivoted beneath the sections ot' shelving a, and connected at its lower end with a cord, fr, whose other eX- tremity is attached to the lower side of the section b.
On turning the lever' o toward the perpendicular, a pin, projecting backward from near its upper end, strikes the cord r, and causes the same to. draw the section 7) downward.` l
The cord 0'- passes between'plates t, fig. 4, that are supported horizontally in a. bracket, u, attached beneath the base-board B of the sections a.
The plates t are connected with a'lever, c, by which they may be drawn, to a degree, out of the bracket a.' On thus drawing out the plates t, the cord r is released from the clamping of the plates, and allowed to be operated by the lever,
On releasing the lever lv, the springgv presses the plates t into thcbrackct il, causing them to clamp and hold the cord, and thus pre-vent the counter-weight` from. raising the section l).
:The sections b may be hung in opposition, so Aascach to act as'thc counter-weight of the other.
'lhc sections a may also be made movable, and operate a's counter-weights to the sectionsb.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byfLet-V vters Patent, is
1. A case of shelves, provided with sliding sections,I combined with counter-weights,.substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of theI levers o v, cord fr, plates t, and bracket n, as specified.
