PUBLICATION-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application filed January 26, 1914. Serial N 0. 814,333.
. scription thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification its object.
being to improve wing and post binders for pamphlets, periodical publications and the like.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly sectional end elevation of one of my improved binders; Fig. 2, a plan view'of a fra ment of the same oaen' F i 3 "a sectional view of the binder indicated by line 33 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4:, a side elevation of a flat metal strip engageable with a publication and posts of the binder.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 5 indicates the back and 6 each of the sides of the binder in flexible union, a pliable lining of said back and sides being looped to form wings 7 longitudinally of said binder outward from said back thereof. Each wing is stiffened by a strip 8 of suitable material therein, the strip being preferably a light indurated fiber material commonly termed press board, and said wing.
is stitched throughout its length rearward of said strip. The stitching 9 of the wings in rear of the stiffening-stripstherein overcomes the tendency of the lining to pull loose from the back and sides of the binder,
or of said wings to open up.
Posts 10 engage the wings of the binder and the apertures in said wings for the posts are preferably eyeleted as shown at 11. Employed in connection with the ends of each post are detachable caps opposing eyelets of the wings, the caps shown being heads of screws 12 engaging said post that is preferably a section of suitable tubing interiorly threaded at its ends to match said screws. However snap-caps may be substituted for said screws without departure from my invention as herein claimed.
Engaging the posts between the wings 7 are holders 13, 14.-. for engagement with the publications to be bound. The holder 13 is a thin fiat strip of suitable material preferably press-board having the apertures therein for said posts eyeleted as shown at 15 and the eyeleting of the strip 13 makes it more adaptable to the posts upon which it has Slltullg engagement.
The holder 14 is a narrow flat strip of metal having hook ends that are engaged by the posts and this form of strip is preferable, in the position shown, for the binding of a. side stitched or stapled publication. However it may be inverted for service with a publication otherwise bound.
Each holder extends at its ends beyond the publication inwhich it is placed and is slipped onto the posts 10,'one or the other of the end caps of each post being removed, as may be most convenient to permit the placing of said publication and holdingstrip therewith in the binder.
The herein described binder is of simple, durable and efiicient construction, and the publications may be readily inserted or removed at either side of said binder that has each post thereof provided at each end with a detachable cap.
I claim:
1. A binder comprising a cover, a lining therefor having wings that extend longitudinally of the cover, means for stiffening the wings, eyelets carried by the wings, posts engaging the eyelets to connect the wings in spaced relation, means for locking the posts to the wings, a slidable holder having end openings that are engaged by the posts and a record holder having end hooks that engage the posts.
2. A binder comprising a cover having pliable wings that are attached to and extend longitudinally of the cover, means for stiffening the wings, eyelets carried by the wings, posts engaging the eyelets to connect the wings in spaced relation, means for locking the posts to the wings. a slidable holder having end openings that are engaged by the posts, and a record holder having end hooks that engage the posts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viscousin in the presence of two witnesses.
