CIGARETTE-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed November 27, 1914. Serial No. 874,251.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that 1, JOHN NEDERLAND, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the :t'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to cigarette holders and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide in combination with a case adapted to contain cigarettes a holder of simple and durable structure adapted to efiiciently hold the cigarettes in place while in the case in order to prevent the cigarettes from being dislodged when the case is opened.
With the above object in view the invention consists of a holder in combination with a case which includes side sections pivotally connected together and means for securing the said sections in closed position, a holder consisting of a tray having suitable compartments therein adapted to receive cigarettes and with means provided at the sides of the compartment for holding the cigarettes frictionallv in the same.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette case showing the sections thereof closed. Fig. '2 is a transverse sectional view of the cigarette case showing the sections open and provided with one form of the holder. Fig. 3 is a plan View of one section of the case showing the form of holder therein as illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. l is a transverse sectional view of a slightly modified form of the holder. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of a case provided with a plurality of cigarette holders. Fig. 6 is an edge view of another modified form of the holder.
The cigarette case comprises sections 1 which are hingedly connected together and which are provided with suitable securing devices indicated at 2 for securing the free edges of the said sections together when they are in closed positions. A holder 3 is pivoted in one or both of the sections 1 and a spring 4 is interposed between the inner edge of the holder and the inner part of the section and is adapted to bring the holder to an angular position with relation to the section to which it is attached when the sections are opened. The position to which the holder 3 is brought when the sections are opened is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawing.v
In the form of the invention asshown in Figs. 2 and 3 the holder 3 is in the form of a tray having a series of partitions mounted on the same. The spaces between the partitions '5 constitute compartments within which cigarettes indicated at 6 may be located. Each partition 5 is provided at a point between its ends with an inwardly disposed flexible tongue 7 which is adapted to frictionally engage the side of the adjacent cigarette and hold the same in the con1partment in which it is located. In this form of the invention it will be seen that the cigarettes may be readily inserted in the compartments and may be easily withdrawn from the same without danger of tearing the paper of the cigarette or of bending or twisting the same.
in the form of the device as shown in Fig. 4 it will be observed that each partition 5 is provided at its outer portion with a concavity 8 and the side portion of the cigarette is adapted to be received in one concavity and the convex portion of the next adjacent partition 5 bears against the opposite side of the cigarette. Thus the cigarette is securely and etn'ciently held in place.
In the form of the device as shown in Fig. 6 it will be observed that each partition 5 is provided at its inner edge with a bead 9 and when the cigarette is inserted in the compartment the beads at the partitions 5 which bound the compartmentsfrictionally engage the side of the cigarette and hold the same in position in the compartment. Therefore it will be seen that a simple and du able device is provided for holding cigarettes and at the same time the cigarettes may be easily and quickly withdrawn from the holder.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a cigarette case a' holder hingedly mounted thereon and having partitions located thereon in spaced relation, thereby providing compartments at the opposite sides of the intermediate parti- In testimony whereof I, aflix my signature tions, each said compartment adapted to rein presence of two Witnesses. ceive a cigarette and the partitions adapted T to frictionally. engage thecigarettes at their H N EDERLALD' 7 5 opposite sides whereby the cigarettes are Witnesses:
