PETER CLAUSEN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Mar. 114, 1916.
Application filed August 29,1914. Serial No. 859,209. A
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER CLAUsEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Closing, Opening, and Looking Covers on Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, more particularly to and more specifically to the fastening of removable covers thereon.
One of the objects, thereof, is to provide a means for fastening upon and releasing from boxes the covers thereof, more quickly and with less wear and breakage than is possible with any present means for accomplishing the same.
A further object is to provide a more durable and more simple means for attachmg and removing covers of boxes.
A further object is to provide a means for attaching and removing covers of boxes, which means are guarded and housed by guards which may be used ashandles for the handling and carrying of such boxes and thus prevent the unfastening of the covers from the boxes, and also prevent breakage of the said means from the contact with other boxes or article s.
A further object is to provide a means for removably attaching the covers of boxes, which shall be so provided with special springs, that the covers may be held firmly upon the boxes and will not vibrate or rattle when being handled or transported.
A further objectis to provide a box for handling or transporting eggs. produce or merchandise, which may be quickly and conveniently locked or sealed.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, arrangement of parts and utilization of principles which will be exemplified in the apparatus and devices hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim. r
In the accompanying drawings wherein are set forth one or more of the possible embodiments of several features of my invention,Figure 1 is an elevation of a box having my invention mounted thereon and affixed thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view with cover attached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view wlth cover detached. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views, of cover detached and removed. Fig. 6 is a detail and Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the Special springs and housingstherefor.
Similar reference numbers refer to similar parts throughout the several Views.
As tending to render clearer certain features of my invention it may here be noted that, with the boxes now in common use for shipping and transporting by railroad, parcel post or otherwise, there is no box of the durability and with the features of construction contained in my invention. WVithmy invention the expense and trouble of shipping produce and merchandise fromthe producer to the merchant or consumer, in sealed or locked boxes or otherwise, will be reduced to a minimum.
Referring now to the illustrative embodiment shown in the drawings there is shown in Fig. l a box 1 and cover 2 suitably attached and firmly held together by means i 3 and 4 said means being rigidly and suitably secured to said box and cover by screws, rivets .or other suitable means, and said attaching and holding means 4 being suitably housed and protected by handles or housings.
Fig. 2 shows in detail the manner and method of attaching and detaching, the attaching and holding means 4 which is shown in dotted lines at 4 in the position occupied when pressed and sprung open to release means 3 securing the cover to the box, thereby unfastening the cover 2 from the box 1. 7 are loops which may be utilized for locking or sealing the package so that the contents cannot be disturbed or changed. Springs 8 which are completely housed in box 1 except where in contact with cover 2 serve to prevent vibration of cover 2 and to raise cover 2 automatically when clasps 4 are pressed and temporarily sprung out into position 4. Screws 10 prevent spring 8 from raising beyond a fixed limit and retain same in the housing provided.
Fig. 3 shows cover 2 raised by springs 8 and in position to be removed from box 1.
Figs. 4 and 5 show in greater detail the form and construction of means 3 and 4 and automatic release springs 8 and means of securing same to box 1. 9 and 11 are respectively, dowel-pin and hole for inserting same if desired.
Figs. 6 and 7 show in greater detail the specially constructed automatic housed one piece springs 8 and the method of housing and using the same.
The boxand cover used in my invention may be constructed of wood or other suitable material and the attaching and holding means 3 and 4 of a good quality of sheet spring-steel or other suitable material and the springs 8 of one piece of coil-springsteel or other suitable material.
It is obvious that my invention comprises a device of great convenience and durability as Well as ofcheap construction.
I consider'my invention to be basic and wish to claim the same as such without regard to the design or shape of the parts thereof, or the material used, or of the purwitnesses.
PETER CLAUSEN.
