BOX OR TRUNK TRAY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,587, dated April 16, 1895. Application filed November 1, 1893- filerial No, 489,728- (No model.)

'To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES ALLEN SNY- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farley, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box or Trunk Trays; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to shipping boxes or trunks, having trays or compartments, which are adjustable to different positions in the box or trunk and has for its special object to provide means, whereby the trays or compartments may be readily set in and adjusted to the desired position in the box and also removed therefrom, Whether full or empty, all of which will be fully and in detail, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the inside of the box or trunk with a single tray in a given position. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the crank for retracting the pins, for holding the trays in position. Fig.3 is asectional view of the springs, &c., with the route of pins.

The tray C, is made in the usual manner of a trunk tray, except there are holes I), b, through the opposite sides, near the corners of the tray, in alignment with the holes or perforations a, a, in the strips B, B. Through these holes I), I), pass the pins or rods D, D, adapted to engage with the perforations a, a, in the strips B, B. The pins or rods D, D, are preferably secured to the inner ends of the tray 0 in casings cl, d. Around the rods D, D, springs of ordinary construction may be coiled as shown at c Fig. 3 to hold the rods or pins outward and in engagement with the perforations a, a. The springs may however be dispensed with, when the rods or pins D,

D, extend to the center of the tray and engage with mechanism hereinafter to be described, for operating them, as shown in Fig. 3.

The rods or pins D, D, are preferably retracted in the following manner: Attached to the middle of the inner ends of the tray is a crank fwhich is increased in size near its lower end into a drum h, of at least twice the size of the distance the rods are to be retracted. To the periphery of the drum h, at its opposite sides, are attached the cords 7c, in, running out and connected to the inner ends of the rods D, D. The crank has a handle 9, hinged to it, so that when the handle is not in use, it may be turned down against the inner end of the tray and thus be out of the way, When not in use.

It is not new to hold trays in boxes or trunks by rods piercing the tray and engaging with holes in the body of the'box 01' trunk and I do not claim it broadly, only in combination with my novel mode of manipulating these pins and handling'the tray whether full or empty.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a shipping box or trunk, the combination of perforated strips B attached to the inner opposite sides of the box or trunk near its corners, and one or more trays, each having rods or pins D, projecting through opposite sides of said tray and held into engagement with said perforated strips by means of coiled springs; a cylindrical casing d, for each of said rods or pins, a drum h mounted on each of the sides of said tray, a hinged handle 9 rigidly connected with each of said drums and the cords 7c, 70, connecting said drums and the rods or pinsD on the same side of the tray therewith, substantially as described.
