Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
' Application filed June 25, 1915. Serial No. 36,225.
To all whom it may concern: 2
Be it known that I, CHARLns A. H. GUNN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Grenada, in the county ofGrenada and State of Mississippi, have invented an Improvement in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in harness and has particular reference to a novel construction of stirrup.
An object of the invention is to provide a stirrup body which is adapted to be oined to the strap therefor by means of a swivel connection whereby to prevent twisting of said strap to permit of ready adjustment of said stirrup body to the movements of the riders foot so that binding or other injury thereto will be prevented.
Another object is the provision of a stirrup of this character which is simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum, and one which is durable and efi'ective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stirrup constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the swivel connection and retaining plate therefor.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates the body portion of the stirrup which is preferably formed of leather and constructed with the usual sides 6 which converge inwardly.
A spacer block 7 having its bottom curved as indicated at 8 is mounted transversely between the sides 6 adjacent the upper end thereof and secured in position by means of a fastening bolt passing longitudinally through said block and secured in position by means of a nut 10. A yoke member 11, substantially U-shaped in cross section is adapted to embrace the spacer block 7 and has its medial portion curved or rounded to conform to the contour of the bottom 8 of said block, said yoke being rigidly secured indicated at 15, each orimped portion being adapted to receive therein a bolt 16 which is mounted in the extremities 13 of the yoke member and secured in position by means of nuts 17.
The retaining plate 14: comprises a central opening 18 adapted to receive the shank 19 of the swivel member generally indicated by 20. The inner end of the shank 19 is provided with a head 21 which is of such thickness as to be received in the space between the retaining plate and the adjacent or upper edge of the spacer block 7 whereby said head may freely rotate. The outer end of the shank 19 is formed with an elongated loop 22 which is adapted to receive therein the stirrup strap 23, said loop being made elongated in order to prevent twisting or wrinkling thereof at its point of connection with the swivel.
When in use, the elongated loop 22 is adapted to extend in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the spacer block :7 and it will be apparent from the foregoing description that, owing to the connection between the strap 23 and the stirrup, the latter will swing with the movement of the riders foot and thus prevent twisting of said strap.
I claim 1. A stirrup comprising a body portion, a spacer block mounted therein, a yoke member secured to said spacer block and having its extremities extending above the same, a retaining plate mounted on said spacer block and bowed intermediate its ends so as to be spaced therefrom, means engaging the extremities of said yoke member for holding said plate in position, and a swivel member having a head interposed between said plate and spacer block.
2. A stirrup comprising a body portion, a spacer block mounted therein and having a rounded bottom, a yoke member of substantially U-shaped formation in cross section secured to said spacer block and having its medial portion rounded to conform to the contour of the bottom of said block, a retaining plate having a central opening engaging said spacer block, said plate being bowed longitudinally and provided adjacent its transverse edges with crimped portions, bolts mounted in said yoke member and engaging said crimped portions, and a swivel member in the opening in said re taining plate and having an elongated loop and a head mounted between said retaining plate and spacer block.
3. A stirrup comprising a body portion, a spacer block carried thereby, a retaining plate supported on said spacer block and bowed longitudinally, said plate having transverse crimped portions adjacent the ends thereof, means engaging said crimped portions for retaining said plate in engagement with said Spacer block, and a swivel member supported between said plate and block: a
4. A stirrup comprising a body portion, a spacer block carried thereby, a retaining plate engaging said spacer block and bowed to provide a space therebetween, and a swivel member having one end'mounted in said space.
5. A stirrup comprising a body portion, a spacer block mounted therein, a yoke member secured to said spacer block, a retaining plate mounted on said spacer block and shaped so as to have a portion thereof spaced from said block, means engaging said yoke member for holding said plate in position, and a swivel member having a portion interposed between said plate and spacer block.
