CONNECTING-BAR FOR RlDlNG-SADDLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,848, dated August 27', 1889.

To on whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WoonLEwIs, of Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and Territory of WVyoming, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connecting-Bars for Riding-Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to girth-rig connecting-piecesforriding-saddles of dilferent kinds, but more particularly for what are known as cowboy or stock saddles. These connecting bars or pieces have heretofore been made of leather and provided with but two metal ringsthat is, one at each end of them or double girths.

My invention consists in a chincha or girth-rig connecting-bar made of malleable cast-iron or other suitable metal, provided not only with a ring at each end, but also with a center ring or loop, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim, whereby the saddle to which the bar is applied may be used either for a double or for a single rig, and other advantages are secured, as herein set forth.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a side View of a saddle with my improved girth-ri g connecting-bar applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the said bar. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sec tion of the bar upon the line 00 co in Fig. 2, and Fig. at is a transverse section of the same upon the line 'y y in Fig. 2.

A indicates the girth rig connecting bar, made of malleable cast-iron or other suitable metal and of any desired or required dimensions. Said bar, which is of slightly dished or bowed shape in direction of its length, is not only provided at its opposite ends with loops or rings 1) b for the usual straps of a double girth-rig, which rings are or may be integral with the body of the bar, but it is also constructed or provided with another loop or ring 0 in the center portion of its length, that admits of the bar being used with a single girth by running the fastening-straps through the center eye or loop 0 of the bar.

Such a girth-rig connecting-bar will not only be more durable than a leather one, but, being rigid, it will not stretch when in use, and thereby will obviate the frequent troubles arising from allowing the front girth-rig to work forward and injure the animals fore shoulder. The applicability, however, of the bar to both single and double girth-rigs is sufficient of itself to make the invention a valuable and economical one, and when it is used for a single girth-rig it will impart an equal strain to both the front and back of the saddle, which the ordinary single girth-rig does not do.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a girth-rig connecting bar for riding-saddles of rigid construction, with a ring or loop at each of its opposite ends and with a center ring or loop, substantially as specified.
