To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ghio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft-Tugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a resilient or elastic shaft tug, in which the bearing parts are of great durability, and of such construction that the wear on both shaft and tug is reduced to a minimum.
The objects of my invention are, first: to produce an evenness of pressure upon the saddle, to the end that sudden ars and jolts may be avoided, and second: to lengthen, as far as possible, the life of shaft and tug.
From the following description, it will be obvious that by slight changes in the shape of my new tug, the same may be used with equally beneficial results as a riders stirrup.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a section on line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. A is a side elevation with all connections; Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the plunger; Fig. 6 shows my invention modified for use as a stirrup.
The numerals 1 and 2 indicate the side or outer plates of my improved tug, the same being of metal or other suitable material. Between said plates are intervening thicknesses, or layers of fibrous material, such as leather, 3; these layers are of sufficient width to permit the same to extend beyond the inner and outer edges of the plates 1 and 2, to the end that the edges of the several thicknesses will be presented for bearing surfaces, both for the shaft when inserted in the tug, and for the outer edges of the tug against other parts of the harness. Said plates and layers of leather are secured together by bolts or rivets, t. To prevent the leather sagging under pressure of the shaft, flanges 5 and 6, projecting inwardly from the plates 1 and 2 under the layers of leather and meeting midway, are provided. De pending from said plates are projections 7 and 8, between which a pin 9 is mounted, said pin forming an attachment for the belly band strap. The upper parts of said plates 1 and 2 are shaped to form a cylinder, when brought together, in which a plunger, 10, is mounted. Said plunger has on its nether extremity an adjustable nut, 11, between which and the head of the cylinder, the spring 12, mounted upon said plunger, bears. The ten sion of said spring may be adjusted by means of said nut, 11. The upper, projecting, end of said plunger is bifurcated, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said forks being perforated, as shown in Figs. 1, a and 5 for attachment to the buckle, 13, the space between the forks being for play of the tongue, 14, of said buckle. The plunger, 10, is provided with a slot, as shown in Fig. 5, through which a pin, 15, mounted between the walls of the cylinder, extends; thus steadying said plunger and preventing its rotation in said cylinder.
From the foregoing description the operation and value of my new tug will be apparent. The several layers of leather or other fibrous material being packed firmly together by the above construction, the edges thereof will present a bearing upon which there can be practically no wear, friction tending but to polish and harden the surface. It will be understood, also, that in the modification of my invention adapting it for use as a stirrup, the buckle 13 will be unnecessary in attaching said stirrup; and that, to provide against the sagging of the leather in the lower portion of the stirrup, which will be wider than the corresponding portion of the tug, and which will, furthermore be subjected to heavier strains, additional flanges 5 and 6 may be provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A shaft tug comprising side plates, intervening thicknesses of fibrous material, said thicknesses of material projecting beyond the outer and inner edges of said side plates, and means for securing together said plates and said thicknesses of material.
2. A shaft tug comprising side plates, intervening thicknesses of fibrous material, said thicknesses of material projecting beyond the outer and inner edges of said side plates, means for securing together said plates and said thicknesses of material, and an elastic support for said side plates and said intervening thicknesses of material.
