Description

mi im JOHN H. MCGOWAN, 0F OINCINNATL-OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 109,138, dated November 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMEN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and :n aking part of the same.
To all whom t ana/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MoGowAN, of Gineinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented al certain new and useful Improvement in Pitmen or Connecting-Rods; and I hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had t0 thc'accompanying drawing making part of this specification..
Nat-ure and bjects of Invention.
` My invention consists of' a peculiar construction, nrrangement, and combination of parts composing 'a pitman, the parts being formed and connected in such a mannerI as to oppose compressive strain with the cast-iron portion and tensile strain by wrought-iron, and permit of the whole being mndecheaply and without skilled workmanship, the object of my invention being to provide t suitable pitman for the .side connections of pumpsl and kindred uses, where costly workmanship -is objectionable. l Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure l is a. side elevation of n. pitnmn embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a detached perspective view ofthe cestiron portions of the pitman.
Figure 3 is a detached perspective view of the wrought-iron portions.
General Description. A is a cest-iron central ycolumn formed with halfboXes for the journals on the ends, and with concave recesses, (t, in the sides. Y
B G are caps formed with half-hearings cr boxes corresponding with those on the column A.
These caps are constructed with flanges b c, which are perforated as shown.
The cap B is also provided with concave recesses b and the cap G wit-h semicircular groove c.
I) is a wrought-iron rod,`bent of the U-form shown, the legs being of such width apart as to closely fit the concave recesses a b c', and pass through the apertures in the flanges?) c, in the mztnner shown.
`The heut rod D is screw-threaded at the ends and i'tted with nuts E E', which serve to secure the pnrts of' the pitman together.
It will be seen that the rod D is of simple round form, screw-threaded at the en'ds, :ind bent, and that the castings are of such form ats to require no inishing except when bored bearings are lpreferred to babbitting.
' Olatm. A pitman composed 0f the f ollmving cle1nentsviz.,
recessed column A a, caps B b' b', C c c', bent rod D,v
and nuts E E, combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand. f
' JOHN H. MCGOWAN. Titnessesz FRANK MILLwAnD, J. L. WARTMANN.
