UNITED STATES Patented December 29,1903.
SAMUEL P. BUSH, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CAR-BOLSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,934, dated December l29, 1903.
Application filed August 19, 1901. Serial No. 72,632. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL PnEsooTT BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolumbus, Franklin county, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Bolsters, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The rst object of m-y invention is to combine the compression and tension members of a bolster, where the same are joined together at theirv ends with a suitable block, preferably of castl metal, and secured to the compression member, and shouldered so as to engage said compression mem ber, the tension Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 of Figure 2; n
Figure 4 is an enlarged view of one end of the bolster; and p Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be seen that at each end of the compression member 6, which `is preferably of channel shape, I provide a block or casting 7 secured by rivets 8 to the compression member at the sides thereof,
and another piece or casting 9 formed to act' practically as a continuation or extension of end of the tension member 10, which is se-l cured between the piece 9 and the casting 7,
as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and held in place by means of rivets l] which, as they r pass through both the tension member and the metal above and below the same, are
thus placed in what is called double shear,
giving the structure considerable additional strength. As shown in the figure referred to, the part 9, which is really a compression member extension, and, generally considered, forms a part of the'compression member 6, is constructed as a separate piece, to facilitate and reduce the cost of manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-V -l. Acar bolster having a compression beam and a tension member, a block shouldered against the compression beam, la base block secured to said beam, the tension member passing between said base block and the tirstmentioned block secured by rivets passing through said blocks and tension member.
2. A car bolster comprising a compression my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
