Description

B. S. SUZUKI.
HAT FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 21, 1914.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co., WASHINGTON. D. c.
BENJAMIN s. SUZUKI, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
HAT-FASTENER. 1
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed November 21, 1914. Serial No. 873,32
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. SUZUKI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vifashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple device for effectually securing a hat to the head of the wearer.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a hat pin which is so arranged and constructed that when engaged with a hat and the hair of the wearer will hold the hat securely upon the head, with the pointed ends of the hat pin lying within the hat and gripping the hair so as not to project beyond the hat as the ordinary hat pin does. It is well known that the pointed end of the ordinary hat pin, projecting beyond a side of the hat, ofttimes proves to be a dangerous article, especially in crowded places. With my invention the pointed ends of the hat pin lie entirely within the hat and do not project.
Still further embodiments of the invention reside in a hat pin which, each time that it is engaged with the hat, passes through the same holes or openings so as not to mutilate the hat as is the case with the ordinary hat pin and which, jabbed into the hatat a difierent place each time that it is applied thereto, soon weakens the material of the hat and mutilates the appearance of the hat.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat showing my device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastener; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the hat showing the fastener applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a hat 10, in the sides of which are secured pairs of, opposed gromets 11 forming openings 12. They fastener proper consists preferably of a single piece of spring-like metal bent in a U-shaped form to provide a body 13 which, at its inner end 14, is wider than at the free or pointed ends 15. A suitable handle or holder 16 is secured to the inner end 1 of the body 13 and consists of a knob 17 which may be of any fanciful design and a shank 18 having a reduced portion 19 passing through the inner end of the body.
It willbe seen that the sides of the body and which terminate in pointed ends 15 are tapered from the inner toward the free ends thereof, and in the application of the fastener to the hat the pointed ends pass through the openings 12 formed by the gromets on one side of the hat and then pass through the hair and project into the openings formed by the gromets in the other side of the hat without, however, having the pointed ends projecting beyond the sides of the hat, the farther pair of gromets having their inner faces inclined or tapered so as to just receive the pointed ends of the sides of the body.
7 With a construction of the character described it will be clearly seen that the hat fastener can be readily applied and as easily removed and will, when in place, pass through the hair as well as the hat to Secure the hat upon the head of the wearer. Furthermore by having specific openings provided for the hat fastener to pass through, mutilation of the hat will be prevented. As mentioned heretofore, the body forming the hat fastener is of a spring-like metal and thus when it passes through the gromets in the inner side of the hat the sides of the body will exert a tension in order to frictionally holdthe sides of the body in the gromets through which they pass.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In combination, a hat having opposed pairs of openings therein with the openings in one pair spaced a greater distance than the openings in the other pair, of a fastenor comprising a single piece of spring like metal bent to form a U-shaped body having pointed ends, with its sides converging in a direction toward its pointed ends,
a handle projecting from the cross portion said sides Will lie in frictionalengagement n the pair of closely'spaced openings, when greater spaced openings.
of said U-shaped'body; said cross portion adapted to limit engagement of said body ture in presence of two Witnesses. with the hat whereby the pointed ends of WVitnesses': BENJ. S. OHNICK,
the cross portion lies adjacent the pair of H. BALLINGER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, bi addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
' Washington, D. G. V
In testimony whereof I affix my sigma-- ENJAMIN s. 's z KLf i
