cense.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I Jon: 0. Rose, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at'Hillsboro, in the county of Washington, State of Oregon, .have invented a new and useful Safeguard or Protector for Sleeping- Berths; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of sleeping cars or rolling stock, and particularly to an improved safeguard or berth protector I for sleeping berths, and an object of the invention is to provide an improved device .of
this nature, which, when the backs of theseats of a sleeping car are thrown down wardlyto form the bunk, is suspended from the arms of the seats or chairs, thereby preventing the occupants of the berth from rolling out on the sides.
Another object of the invention is-to provide a safeguard or protector consisting of two sections, so hingedly connected as to prevent the sections from swinging outwardly, when the protector or safeguard is suspended in position. 1
Another object of the inventionis to provide means to prevent the safeguard from being lifted upwardly, as long as the backs of the seats or chairs are thrown downwardly to form the bunk.
In practical fields the details'of construc tion may necessitate alterations, within the scope-of what isclaimed.
The invention comprises further features.
and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. a
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a view in side elevation ofportions or" twoadjacent sleeping car seats or chairs, showing the backs thereof thrown downwardly toform a bunk with the improved safeguard or protector as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the safeguard or protector. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the adjacent chairs or seats of a sleeping car, showing the backs 3 thereof as having been thrown. down forming the berth or bunk, and 4 denotes the safeguard or protector. This'protector or safeguard consists of the two sections 5 and 6, hingedly united as shown at -7 Each sec- I Specification of LcttersPatent;
falling tionadjacent its outer end arod 8eX-f tending transversely through it. The upper and lower edge of each section where the rod 8 extends through the same is provided or swaged as shown at 13, to hold the collars in place, as well as preventing vertical movement of the rod. In this manner each ented Feb. 22, 1916. npplicationiiled 0ctober26,1915. SerialNo.57,949. v
of the rods 8 is swiveled transversely of the section. The upper end of each rod termi-' nates in a curved hook 14'. 1V hen the backs 3 of the seats or chairs are thrown downwardly to form the bunk or berth, the protector is arranged as shownin Fig. 1, the
hooks l4 engaging over the arms 15 of-the seats, thereby supporting the protector or safeguard. Upon one of the end edges (if the hinged end of one ofthe sections a plate plate is provided with an enlarged base portion 19,- the faces 20 of which extend downwardly and fromeach other, and 'longfas the backs 3 are'disposed as shown; in Fig. 1, withan occupant in theberthor bunk, the protector or safeguard is pre-' vented from being raised. 'However, after the occupant is out of the berth, the two,
backs 3 of the seat may be raised byfap plying pressure, upon their under surfaces where their adjacent edges 18 come to-' 7 gether, suliiciently tilting the backs lip-g5 wardly so that the hooks 1 1 will disengage the arms 15, then the twosections of :the Y safeguard or protector maybe collapsed one toward the other upon their hinged connection.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A safeg'uard or protector for sleeping V berths comprising two sections hingedly' united, the hinged connections being so arranged as to prevent the sections from .hinging outwardly, each sectiontoward its outer end: having a rod swiveled trans-' versely therethrou'gh and extending vertically, said rod at its upper end terminating in a hook designed to engage over the arm ofthe seat or chair forming a part of the sleeping berth. a
2. A safeguard or protector for sleeping berths comprising two sections hingedly united, the hinged connect-ions being so arranged. as to prevent the sections from end of the section having a plate extending.
downwardly between the adjacent edges of the back forming the sleeping bunk; or
berth, and terminating in an enlarged face L portion,to preventthe. protector from being.
raised.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification in-the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
