The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:

In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a hospital bed with its sections in horizontal or bed position, an overhead fracture frame carried thereby, a sling suspended therefrom and the invention suspended thereby in litter formation.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a pair of collapsible and extensible sections of the litter and in that formation.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2 and in the direction of the arrows.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the invention when utilized as a cot, table or bench.

Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a leg thereof and the immediately associated parts.

Fig. 6 is a rear view of a bed with head section elevated, one of the cot sections being illustrated in its bed mechanism concealing position (storage position), the other being partially removed.

Fig. '7 is a transverse section showing the bed mounting of the cot sections and certain of the associated parts.

Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a hospital bed, with its sections in horizontal position and the cot sections positioned thereon in side guard position.

Lying on base straps 21, see Fig. 1, are two pairs of hingedly connected cot or litter-forming sections 33. Each may be channel bordered as at 34, see Fig. 2. Space blocking 35 is secured to said member 33 as illustrated and to the under face of said member and at adjacent ends thereof.

Hinge means 36 secured to the blocks 35 hingedly connects the two sections together. Secured to the under face of each member 33 adjacent block 35 as at 31 is corrugated plate 38 forming elongated tubular guides 39. The blocks are apertured as at 40. Rods 41, each with an angular end 42, are slidably associated with the aligned guides 39 and apertures 40 to sustain the hingedly connected cot sections together and in coplaner relation.

Whenever it is desired to form a cot, the two pairs of extended sections are seated in the sockets provided by straps 2'! and 3| and brace 3m. Associated with each end of said structure is a le 43 having the anti-friction foot 44 and the upwardly directed spindle 45. The spindle seats in aligned apertures 29 and 30 and the curved free end 28 bears upon the upper end of the leg. In cot formation, as well as litter formation, reenforcing rods 4| are utilized.

Reference will now be had to Figs. 6 and 7. In the former, frame In includes cross member 46 at the upper end of the back thereof. The pair of members 21, etc.. may be hung upon said member 46 and thus the sockets of said members 21, etc., are superposed. The lower spaced pair, see Fig. 6, nests one pair of folded sections, and the upper pair is about to nest the other pair of said sections. When both pairs of sections are nested, the same form a closure for the rear end of the bed frame and conceal the frame included mechanism for raising and lowering bed sections, etc.

Reference will now be had to Fig. 8 wherein 3 there is illustrated a still further use of said sections. Herein standards I4 and cross bar l5are applied to the bed. Then each hingedly connected pair of sections 33 is unfolded and rod locked in aligned relation. Then one of such resulting units is placed on the bed adjacent standard I4 and when both are so placed the bed is provided with side boards for patient retention when desired.

Note fixture I 6, footboard 20 and side boards 33 form a well arrangement which is frequently desirable.

While the invention has been illustrated and described in great detail in the drawings and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character.

The several modifications described herein as well as others which will readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in this art, all are considered to be within the broad scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims.

The invention claimed is:-

1. A section support and cross member unit including a base strap having its opposite ends reversely bent, and a U-shape strap secured to the first strap opposite the bent ends thereof, the bent ends and the first strap having aligned apertures, the two straps forming a socket for section reception.

2. A section support and cross member unit including a base strap having its opposite ends reversely bent, a U-shape strap secured to the first strap opposite the bent ends thereof, the bent ends and the first strap having aligned apertures, the two straps forming a socket for section reception, and at least one brace member between 4 said straps to form therewith a plurality of sockets, there being one less brace member than there are sockets.

3. In combination a pair of independent cross members each having a socket forming portion and two similar but oppositely curled apertured ends, a plurality of independent longitudinally extensible and collapsible sections, each section being medianly hinged and foldable for such collapse, said section being terminally engaged in said sockets, and a leg for each curled apertured end and detachably mounted in the aperturing of the curled end, said sockets being adapted also to receive said sections when the latter are collapsed.
