Be it knownthat l, MCDOUGALL DUCKHAM, a subject ofthe King of Greatv Britain, residing,1 in Ashstead, Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Vertical Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
In operating' vertical retorts for earbonizing; coal or the like, it has been proposed to provide ports at dierent levels in the sideof the retort so that the lrases and volatile products produced in diiferentzones may escape from the respective zones without4 having to. traverse the hot charge in the rest of the retort.` The separate collection 'of the products from vthe several zones is -an obvious modification of this method of workin,3,f. v
"The requirements of a gas-works or coking-works with regard tp the quality and quantity of the by-'products are by no means constant. Hitherto, fhowever, therehas been ajlackfoflem'bility the vertical retort in A. this respect. Slight variations,'both quali- 'tative and `quantitative, havebeen possible by varying the dimensions and temperature of what has come to be called the free space at the top of the retort, but the variations.
arenot adequate for all requirements. y
The present invention relates to a construction of vertical retort .for carbonizing coal' ori-the like, whether for gas-making or for coke-making, in which the gases and volai "tile products may be withdrawn from the several zones of' the retort and collected j either separatelvor together and in a rapidly cooled condition or, 4by a 4modification of the construction, after subjection to more or less considerablel heating.
Tlie construction comprises a flue con'- nected with ports at diii'erent levels in the Wallet theslretortwand adapted to be subdivided into two or morecollecting" cham:`ri
bers each having its own oli-take, or to be used as a single collecting chan1ber,-and situated in such a iosition relativelyto the heating flues of the setting that the products'escaping into it are not sub3ected I to any further heating but are cooled as rapidly as may be. lThis construction 'alone affords considerable flexibility as compared with the known suggestion of merely collecting the products from dierent zones separately; since it is possible to collect together the products from two or more Zones while in the condition which they have directly they s leave the retort, withy ai,
result dii'erentl from that which ensuesV when lthe separately'collected productsare subsequently mined? Furthermore, no; previous constructionhas taken account of `the necessity for remov'. the collecting flue from thei-niueme of t `@heating wall of the retort.A ln order, however, 'that-the nature of 'the products may be varied by further coollng or by heating them, the invention also `provides luesQwhich can be traversed by cold air or can be heated at will ras a4 thetjwall forming the end of thisrectangle- 'arethe gas ports b at different levels; vthey, C
open into the collecting flue c in which are i' dampers for subdividing; it into as manyv compartments as there are Vports .(except that the top compartment serves two {norte} and an off-take e for each such compartment adapted to be connected with an exhauster, y
0n cath side .of the flue b is a heating Hue f,
under ycontrol of suitable dampers. Obviouslyi, however, these flues may be heated separately from the flues g.
4With dampers dfn the positions shown 1n thiscase connected with the heatingues g of the retort and heated by the same gases vsa the products from three zones-.of the retort'4 are collected each separately, but it Ythe A dampers are withdrawn .and the twoflower,
oE-'takes closed, the products'rom all the zones will be collected together Atrent the top oH-take. The flues f may bcsmilarly provided with dempers to subdivide them into compartments corresponding withthose of the collecting Hue, and each sticht-conlpartment may .be separately connected withthe supply of heat and the wastcf'igas'flue,
' so that each compartment of the collecting' flue may be heated to a desired temperature. Having thus described the nature of this invention and the' best means Ilmow of car-I rying rthe same into practical efect, llclfrlrrl:
