,TEMPORARY HOLDER FOR CAR-.REPORT 'BLAKS AND THEv LIKE.
Specification of Letterrslatent. l; fPatgntedFb 8 1916 Application filed August 16, 1911/. 'Serial No.j644,442.
To @ZZ/whom t may concern:
Be it 'known-that I, NOTEN D. BAYLLAN- TiNF., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Holders for Car-Report Blanks and the like, of which I do declare the followingv to be a full, clear, and exact description, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for temporarily holding blanks to be written upon, such, for example, as conductors7 car reports, wheel reports or the like, and the invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of a temporary holder embodying my invention. Fig.v 2 is a fractional view upon an enlarged scale in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a fractional view upon an enlarged scale of two adjacent leaves connected by a bias fabric.
As shown, the holder comprises the front cover A and back cover A hinged together as at A3. Between the covers A and A are arranged -a series ofV intermediate hinged spacing boards, plates or leaves B. Preferably, e'ach of the covers A and A is formed of a cardboard body' a to which is .glued the cloth a', the edges of this cloth being turned over the edges of the body a upon its inner face'in the usual manner, and the central part of the cloth a forms the hinge back A3 thatV unites the covers A and A. In order to enable the inner face of each of the covers A and A to present a smooth and even support for the blank while it is being written upon, I attach, as byvglue upon the inner face of each of the covers A and A, a sheet of cardboard L2 or like` material sufficiently thick to afford a smoothv .y support for the blank and avoid any irregularity incident to the folding` over of the edges of the cloth a upon the vinner face of the body a. That is to say, the sheet a2 will be so thick that when it is attached to the body a of the cover and extends across the folded edges of the cloth'ct, the folds of the cloth do not form ridges around the edges of the sheet c62, but this sheet presents a smooth surface overv substantially vthe whole inner'rface of the'cover, thereby enabling the'blanlrtoy be writ-'ten upon to its extreme edges.
y'.lhey boards ror sheets B are preferablyy formed; of 'at least ftwo thicknesses of cardboard or likef material., in order that the sheets B may present smooth and unbroken surfaces to support the blanks to be written upon from edge to edge. These sheets B have their inner edges hinged to the holder in the following manner: A strip C of cotton cloth or other suitable material is connectedto each of the covers A and A by gluing the edges of this strip C between the facing sheet a2 of each cover and the body a of each cover, and the strip of cloth C is provided with a number of vfolds 0 which are arranged be tween the thicknesses of the cardboard or vlike material of which the portions or sheets B are formed.v These folds 'o of the cloth C and weft threads Vextend between and unitev the sheets or boards B together and to the covers A andv A.f By thus disposing the cloth C so that the 'strength of both itsl warp and weft threads is utilized, greater durability is attained and I am enabled to use a lighter'qualityof clothv than would otherwise be required. The report blanks will be temporarily held within my improved holder by placing a blank between the cover A and the facing sheet or leaf B and securing it thereto temporarily, as with a wire paper clip or byi an elastic band passing from end to end .of the cover at its hinge joint; and similarly, blanks will be placed between the succeeding leaves or boards B. My invention affords an exceedingly simple and effective temporary holder for report blanks, such, for example, as are used by -conductors of railway trains, yard masters and others and it is adapted tofsustain the report blanks, so that each blank can be filled out or written upon to its extreme edge while supported upon a smooth surface.
Having thus described Iny invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A temporary holder for report blanks and the like comprising front and back Covers formed of separate, outer, rigid boards, a coninion cloth covering extending over and secured to the outer faces of said outer boards and forming a iexible hinge between the same, the edges of said covering being folded over and secured to the inner faces of said outer boards, inner boards of heavy eard board secured to the inner surfaces of said outer boards and extending over the folded edges of the cloth covering, a leaf of the same size as said inner boards oomprising two thicknesses of heavy oard board secured together, and a flexible fabric strip having its ends extending between and secured to the inner and outer boards of said cover and having a fold extending between and secured to the boards of said leaf, said inner boards and said leaf having smooth, uninterrupted rigid surfaces for supporting the blanks, substantially as described.
