Be it known that we, PETER LEE Fencinson and Josnrir Y. \Vnnnnwmonr, citizens of the lnited States, residing at ()gden, 1n the county of Weber and State of Utah,
have invented new and useful 'Impr0ve-' ments in Signs, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to signs and more particularly to illuminated signs. I ()ne of the principal objects of the in- "vention is to provide a sign particularly I adapted for exhibiting automobile numbers irrespective of the distance from the light.
Further objects of this inventign will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form apart of this application. and in which g Figure 1 is a front elevation Fig. 2 is a top plan view. section takenon the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the panel casing is formed.
l-teferring more particularly to the drawings 1 and 2 represent the paneland light casings respectively which are secured together in a manner to be hereinafter described. The light casing is constructed of a single sheet of metal in the form of: a frustum of a cone, and has an incandescent light 3 secured therein in any suitable manner. Projecting laterally from the light casing 2 is a tube r which communicates at its inner end with the light casing and has secured in its outer end a red glass 5 which acts as a danger signal and is commonly called the tail light when used on automobiles.
The panel casing is constructed .of a single sheet of material and eomprisesa front 6, back 7, top 8, bottom 9 and ends 10 and 11. Theblank is constructed in the manner shown with the front arranged intermediate the top and bottom 8 and 9 and Withthe Specification of Lettershtent.

bottom arranged between the front and back (3 and 7 respectively. The ends 10 and 11 being connected to and forming longitudinal extensions with the back and being provided with suitable flanges to be hereinafter described.
In forming the casing the blank is bent upon a line 12 so as to bring the top and the front at right angles to each other and is then bent upon the line 13 so as to brin the top and bottom parallel. It will be noticed that the bottom is somewhat Wider than the top both being substantially triangular in order that a stencil retaining lip 11 may be formed thereon by bending the bottom or crimpingthe same upon the lines 15, 16 and 17. The bottom and back are bent at right angles by bending the blank upon the line 18 which brings the free edges of the back and top together. These parts are then secured together by crimping or folding the flanges 19 and 20 together as shown in Fig. l. The end 10 has its flanges 21 and bent at right angles thereto and the end bent at right angles to the back by bending on the line 28. The flanges 22 are secured in any suitable manner to the top and bottom members while the flange 21 is secured to the front.
The end 11 has its flanges 2i bent at ri ht angles thereto and the end is then bent on the line 25 to bring the same at right angles to the back and in position for the flanges 2a to engage the top, bottom and front of the casing as will be readily understood. This end is provided with an opening to receive a conical lightcasing 2 which is secured therein by forming a lip 25 on the light casing adjacent its large end and spinning up the metal on the inside of the end 11. 1
Prior to bending the blank in shape, as just described, the front 6 is out out as shown at 26 to produce openings and the folded on the lines 29 and 30 to form blank guiding lips 31 which lips coact with the front to produce blank receiving channels 32 which register with the channel 33 of the casing and of the casing is provided with a series of separated longitudinal slots 34: which permit the insertion-of the blanks and the top has struck up there- '35' which may be beat the lip 14:. The top over the blank to hold them in place. It will be noticed that when the casing is bent up into position that it is substantially triangular in top plan view so that the distance between the front and back grows smaller in the direction awa v from the light.
The panels may be either constructed with opaque back grounds and transparent lens 01' with transparent back grounds and opaque numbers. The lamp casing may be interiorly silver'ed or otherwise treated to provide a reflecting surface and as the light is reflected therefrom it is again reflected from the back through thepanels. the inclined back providing an equal rellectirg surface at all points. A lamp of this character is adapted tobe inserted into the back ofthe machine and have the front arranged flush with the back, the lamp casing being entirely concealed except the red light only exposed.

1. A' sign casing formed from a single piece of material and comprising substantially rectangular front and rear walls, a top and bottom of trapezoidal formation,
-and end walls, said front wall having a series of openings therein, said top adjacent its juncture with the front wall having a slot corresponding to each front opening with its longer dimension parallel to the plane'of the front opening and approximately equal to the width of the front opening, andbendable tongues struck up from the top .and disposed at one side of the slots in close proximity thereto.
A sign casing formed from a single piece of material and comprising substan tially rectangular front and rear walls, a top and bottomof trapezoidal formation, the adjacent edges of said top and rear wall being provided with bendable interlocking flanges, end walls. said front wall having a series of openings therein, said top adjacent its juncture with the front wall having a slot corresponding to each front opening with its longer dimension parallel to the plane of the front opening and approximately equal to the width of the front open:
ing. said bottom wall being bent to provide a vertical longitudinally disposed flange in alinement with the. rear edgesvof said slots. and bendable tongues struck up from the top and disposed at one side of said slots in close proximity thereto.
