This invention relates to cartons for merchandise, and more particularly to an improved shipping carton for merchandise adapted to be quickly and easily arranged to display merchandise therein and to dispose a relatively large area having advertising matter printed thereon above the carton proper.

I am familiar with prior cartons of the above general type wherein the carton display portion if extended above the carton proper requires that the blank from which the carton is formed be printed on both sides thereof and/or requires considerable excess material and resultant increased folding operations both in folding the carton initially and in arranging the same for display purposes.

I have devised an improved shipping and display carton adapted to be formed from a single blank printed on only one side of the blank and which is relatively economical of manufacture and assembly, which is of substantial construction for shipping, and which can be quickly and easily arranged to provide a display area above the carton. The display portion is arranged in a simple manner by folding a cover portion of the carton back on itself and retaining the same above the carton proper by improved tab means.

It is a primary object of my invention, therefore, to provide an improved shipping and display carton.

Another object of my invention is to provide a shipping carton which can be quickly and easily arranged to utilize a cover portion of the carton as an advertising display area extending above the carton proper.

Another object of my invention is to provide a combined shipping and display carton wherein a cover side portion may be quickly and easily extended above the carton proper to present advertising matter printed thereon and to uncover a side of the carton to render visible merchandise within the carton.

Another object of my invention is to provide a self-supporting display carton having a portion extended above the carton proper which is supported in an improved manner.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved shipping and display carton formed from a single blank which may have printed matter on all exposed surfaces thereof by printing on only one side of the blank.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved method of forming a shipping and display carton.

Other objects of my invention and the invention itself will be increasingly apparent from a consideration of the following descriptions and drawing wherein; I

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a carton blank with the blank side forming the inner walls of the carton uppermost;

Fig. 2 is a perspective front view of an assembled carton prior to arranging a display portion and support portion in assembled position for display purposes;

Fig. 3 is a perspective rear view of the carton of Fig. 2 with the display portion and support portion in assembled position;

Fig.4 is a front elevational view of the carton of Fig. 3; and,

Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken along line 55 of Fig. 4.

Referring now to the drawing, I have indicated generally at lo a blank formed of suitable material such as cardboard cut for folding and assembly operations, the blank being shown with the side thereof uppermost which will form the inner walls of the carton when assembled. The carton rear wall is indicated at ll with the scored lines defining the rear wall and along which the blank will be bent for assembly indicated in dotted form at lla, llb, Ho and lld. The rear wall II is also punched to provide generally semi-circular tabs l2-l2 for a purpose to be later described and which will be bent along dotted lines In. The rear wall II is further punched to provide a tab l3 which will be bent along the scored portion shown as dotted line l3a and which is accessible for bending through the provision of a punched out finger hole indicated at l4. A flap I5 is provided along the right hand edge of rear wall ll, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Extending from rear wall II is a side wall l6 defined by dotted lines I lo and Mia. Th base of side wall I6 is provided with a tab l! which will be bent along a scored line indicated by a dotted line l'la. The front wall of the carton is indicated at l8 and joins side wall l6 along line Hill, the front wall l8 having a base l9 joined therewith and defined by dotted lines I90 and l9b. A longitudinally extending base flap 20 is provided and formed by bending along line l9b. Extending from the left hand edge of front wall I8 is a second side wall 2l formed by bending along dotted line 2la, the side wall 2l being provided with a tab 22 at its base formed by bending along dotted line 2).

An outer or second base 23 is formed by a bottom extension of rear wall I l as defined by dotted lines I lb and 23a, the extension also providing an outer side flap 24. The rear wall ll is also extended upwardly to provide a top wall 25 defined by dotted lines Ila and 25a, the extended portion also providing an outer side or outer front wall 26. The outer side wall 26 is perforated along the solid line indicated at 21 and is adapted to be bent along dotted lines 2'la-2la for purpose to be later described. The outer side wall 26 at the top edge thereof has indentations or spaced punched out U portions to provide tabs 28--28. The front wall I8 is cut to provide a generally central U form opening therein as indicated at 29 and for a purpose to be later described.

The carton is assembled by disposing front wall l8 in substantially parallel spaced relation to rear wall II as determined by the width of endwalls i6 and 2i, and tab I5 is glued or otherwise secured to the inner face of end wall 2|. Tabs H and 22 of end walls l6 and 2| respectively are bent horizontally toward each other and retained by base I8 through disposing the longitudinal flap 20 between the front and rear walls to abut the inner face of rear wall H. The outer base 23 and the outer side flap 24 are disposed so that the outer base covers base 19 and side flap 24 abuts the outer side of front wall i 8 and preferably partially covers U opening 29 of the front wall. The outer side wall 26 is then disposed to abut the outer face of front wall l8 and of outer side flap 2, the outer side wall 26 being of a depth preferably substantially equal to the depth of front wall i8. The top wall 25 will then close the carton and the carton may be sealed by merely securing the outer side wall 26 in any suitable manner as by employing adhesive strips.

It will be apparent that any material printed on the external surfaces of the rear wall, the end walls, the base, the top wall and the outer side wall will be exposed to view during shipment, and that all such printing may be done on one side of the blank only.-

In order to employ the carton for display purposes, the seal of the outer side wall 26 is broken and the outer base 23 and outer side flap 24 are bent to the position illustrated in Figure 2. The outer side flap 24 is then inserted beneath tab I 3 to lock the flap in angular relation to the rear Wall ll whereby the base l9 and outer base 23 jointly form a supporting base for the carton to maintain the same in selfsupporting position. The top wall 25 and a part of outer side wall 26 joined therewith as defined by the full line 21 and the dotted lines 2111, as best illustrated in Figure 3, are raised vertically and the remaining portion of outer side wall 26 above lines 21 and 21a is folded back on itself and secured by pressing tabs i2 towards the interior of the carton and permitting tabs 28 to be projected through the openings thus formed by tabs l2 to extend through the rear wall. Thus, the carton may be quickly and easily arranged as a self-supporting display carton with any advertising matter on the front face i8 of the carton exposed to view and also any advertising matter on the billboard portion comprising the folded portion of the outer side wall 26. It will be apparent that designs of various contours may be used by partially cutting the outer side wall 26 as along line 21, and for purposes of illustration, I have shown a design comprising an oval of one color indicated at 36 having an arrow 3| of another color extending thereinto. The top wall 25 and outer side wall 26 disposed as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 form a billboard portion above the carton or box proper.

The U form opening in front wall I 8 permits articles within the carton such as units of a length substantially corresponding to the carton length and placed one above the other to be visible and at the same time aiiords protection against unwarranted removal of such units in that the unit must be lifted above the front wall before it can be removed.

It will be apparent by reference to Figs. 4 and 5 that the tabs l2 and 28 are hidden from view by front wall It and that the tabs l2 are upwardly inclined permitting removal of articles within the carton without tending to break the tabs. The upwardly and inwardly extending tabs i2 on the rear wall II abut and engage the advertising side of the billboard portion 26 while the downwardly and outwardly extending tabs 26 of the outer side wall 26 abut and engage the outside surface of the rear wall ll thereby making the billboard rigid even when the back portion of the billboard has been sharply bent as at the scored portions Ha and 26a.

Although I have shown and described a preferred form of my invention I contemplate that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described by invention, what I claim is:

1. A display carton comprising an upwardly open box, a billboard portion extending upwardly from the box and supported by the rear wall thereof, the billboard portion comprising an integral extension of the top rear wall portion folded back on itself to dispose the uppermost part of the extension forwardly of the lowermost extension part, and means for interlockingly connecting the said folded uppermost part to the rear wall, said means comprising a plurality of spaced apart tabs punched in said rear wall, said tabs abutting said billboard section and extending inwardly and upwardly, a plurality of indentations along one edge of said billboard portion to form a plurality of spaced apart tabs, said tabs projecting through openings in said rear wall formed by said punchings and abutting the outside of said rear wall.

2. A shipping and display carton including a rear wall, a combined top and outer side wall formed integrally with said rear wall, a plurality of spaced apart upwardly and inwardly extending tabs punched in said rear wall, and a plurality of indentations along the outer edge of said outer side wall to form a plurality of spaced apart tabs adapted to be inserted into openings formed in said rear wall by said punched tabs, said outer side wall in the display position abutting a portion of said rear wall, the tabs on said outer side wall abutting the outside of said rear wall and the tabs on said rear wall abutting the display side of said outer side wall'to securely hold said carton in display position.

3. A shipping and display carton including a front wall, a rear wall, a combined top and outer side wall formed integrally with said rear wall, said outer side wall abutting said front wall while in the shipping position thereby to display ad'- vertising matter thereon, a plurality of spaced apart upwardly and inwardly extending tabs punched in said rear wall, a plurality of indentations on the outer edge of said outer side wall, said indentations forming a plurality of spaced apart tabs for cooperation with the punched openings formed by the tabs in said rear wall, and scoring at an intermediate portion of said outer side wall whereby said outer side wall may be bent and the tabs thereon inserted through the openings in said rear wall for securing said box in the display position.
