FILM-STORAGE SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
v Patented Feb. '1, 191s.
Application filed January 18, 1915. Serial No. 2,815.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LGnonoE F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film- Storage Safes, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a storage safe for picture films, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
On account of the highly inflammable or combustible nature or character of picture films, it has heretofore been difficult, if not impossible, to insure them against loss by fire, and where it has been possible to obtain such insurance, the premium rate thereof has necessarily been so high, on account of the great risk, as to render it almost prohibitive.
The principal object of'the invention is to provide an absolutely fire proof safe for the reception and storage of films, which "shall be simple and inexpensive in construcform, strong, durable and tion, compact in efficient in use, to the end, that insurance may be obtained on the films at a low or reasonable premium rate, also that they will be fully protected against loss or damage whether insured or not.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In the accompanying, drawings, which serve to illustrate an embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a front face view ofaia. film storage safe constructed according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmental plan view of one of the drawers of the safe showing it detached from the casing and illustrating a simple and novel manner of forming compartments therein for the reception of the film carrying spools; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated b the arrows, but showing the drawer with the lid thereof closed, and illustrating some of the film spools located in the compartments of thedrawer, and Fig. 4: is an enlarged vertical sectional view through a portion of the casing of the safe showing portions of some of the drawers therein in elevation and in their closed positions, but illustrating one of the drawers in vertical section and ashaving been drawn outwardly for the purpose of removing the films therefrom, the lid of said drawer being shown in its closed position by continuous lines, and in its open position by dotted lines.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
The reference numeral 7 designates the casing or body of the safe as a whole, which consists of a rectangular casing or outer wall 8, which may be of any suitable size has in its face or front wall a series of openings 9, arranged in horizontal and ver'- tical rows forthe reception and operation of a plurality of drawers. Located in each of the openings 9, of the body 7, is a rectangular box or receptacle 10, which is preferably made of metal, and as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, are spaced at their rear ends from the wall 8, and from each other, and it will also be understood that said boxes. or receptacles are spaced from the side walls of the casing 8, of the body of the safe. This same spacing arrangement is employed between the top of the casing and the upper surface of the upper boxes or and material, but preferably of metal, and
receptacles, and also between the bottom of the casing 8 and the lower surface of the lower boxes or receptacles, which said spaces Slidably located in each of the recepta- I cles 10, is a drawer 12, each of which is rectangularin shape, or of a shape to correspond with the receptacle 10, in which it is located, and by preference is made of metal. Each of the drawers 12, has near its front end a vertical partition 13, which isspaced from the front end or face of the drawer, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings,
and this space in each of the drawers is supplied or filled with asbestos 11, or other non-combustible or non-heat conducting material. At a point somewhat rearwardly of its longitudinal middle each of the drawers 12 is provided with a transverse and vertical partition 14, which divides the drawer in the front and rear compartments, the latter being employed as a counterbaldisks 18, united at their central portions by a ance'fo-r the front portion of the drawer when the same is withdrawn to about the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, or so as to prevent it tipping downwardly; The front compartment of each drawer is divided into a plurality of chambers 0r compartments 15, by means of vertically and longitudinally extended partitions 16, which are spaced from each other at sufficient distances apart to furnish the chambers 15 for the reception of the film carrying spools 17, which-are of the well-known construction, comprising a pair of spacedapart parallel pin or spool 19. on which the film 20 is wound between said flanges. The depth of each drawer 12 and its compartments 15 is sufficient to receive the spools so that the upper edges of their flanges will be located a slight distance below the upper edges of the sides of the drawer, as well-as the upper edges of the partitions 16, which divide the drawer into compartments. A lid 21 of metal is suitably hinged at its rear end to the upper portion of each drawer, and has at its front end an upwardly extended fiangei 22, to strike against the front surface of the safe body 7, when the drawer 13 is closed, thus tightly closing the upper portion of the opening 9, in which the drawer is located. For this same purpose the front end or face of each drawer is provided at its perimeter with a flange 23, which. it is obvious, will close the opening 9 in which the drawer is located at its sides and bottom, while the flange 22 and the lid 21 will close the upper portion of said opening in such a manner as to exclude heat or flames,
Each of the drawers 12 is provided in each of its compartments 15, with a spool retainer and lifter, which consists of a strap 24, preferably of metal, which is secured at its front, end to the upper front portion of the pair of partitions 16, between which the strap is located by means 0 a transverse pin 25. and is extended downwardly to near the bottom of the compartment in which it is located, and then upwardly to its rear upper portion. and terminates with a hook or finger piece 26.. by means of *which it can be t..ken holdof and raised slightly so as to lift the'spool and the film which it carries upwardly in its compartment 15. sufiiciently for said spool to be gras ed for the purpose of removing the same. Each of the drawers 12. may lie-provided with a handle 27. on its front end. to he used for moving the drawer back and forth in its compartment, and also for retaining the lid 21 of a drawer which has been withdrawn in a position slightly inclined from the perpendicular, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, so that said lid will automatically closeby reason of its gravity.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be understood and clearly seen that, by constructing the safe according to my invention and as above described, the films will be individually enveloped and protected by the'compartments of the drawers, as well as collectively protected by the drawer casings, as well as the casing of the body of the safe and its lining of non-combustible material. If desired, the casing 7 may be provided at its bottom with rolLers orcasters 28, to enable it to be readily t'rundled to any desired location, such as within a vault, whereby additional protection will be afforded.
.While the partitions 16 of the drawers 12, may be made in any suitable manner, yet in Fig. 2 of the drawings, I have shown them as being made of a continuous sheet of metal formed into parallel members or. partitions 16, with the spaces therebetween alternately open, which open ends are closed by means of vertical partitions 29 and 30,
located transversely withi the drawer at the rear and front ends respectively of said partitions. This method of forming the partitions of the drawers will be found a simple and convenient one, but I do not desire to be understood as limiting myselfthereto, nor do I desire to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, as it is obvious that details of construction and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Havingthus fully described my inven-.
tion what I claim and desire. to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A safe of tlie character described consisting of a casing having its interior, with the exception of its front. wall, lined with non-combustible and nonsheat conducting material, a receptacle extended into the lined casing and having its front end open,
a drawer having vertically disposed compartments andslidably located 'insaid receptacle and having at and within its front end a lining of non-combustible and non-heat conducting material to coincide with the opening of said receptacle, said drawer having at its front end a perimetrie 3 flange to'rest agalnst the outer surface "of the front wall of the casing when the drawer is closed-,and'a gravity'actu'ated lid hinged at ducting material interposed between said receptacles, each of said'receptacles having its front end open, a drawer having vertically disposed compartments and slidably mounted in each of said receptacles and provided at its front end with lining of noncombustible and non-heat conducting material,'each of said drawers having at its front end a perimetric flange to rest against the front surface of the casing when the drawer is closed, and a lid hinged at its rear end to the upper portion of each drawer and having at its front end an upwardly ex- WM.
