4 Claims. 01. 312298) This invention relates to a coin and currencytill cabinet and more particularly one containing a substantial number of-compartments which may be securely closed by simultaneous movement of two cover portions.

It is a primary object of my invention to provide a coin and currency till which may be attached to a wall or the like, having both vertical and horizontal storage compartments which may be simultaneously closed.

It is yet another object of my invention to'provide a device in which cover portions, when moved from their closure positions, will disappear from sight and leave clear and open access to the contents of the case.

It is yet another object of my invention to provide a currency till in which two operatively connected cover portions are fully counterbalanced.

Other and further features and objects of the invention will be more apparent to those skilled in the art upon a consideration of the accompanying drawings and following specifications, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary embodiment of the invention, with the understanding, however, that such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring now to the drawings:

A device constructed according to my invention consist, generally, of a rectangular vertical cabinet 11 and a second horizontal cabinet 12 fixedly attached at the center point of the vertical cabinet. Both cabinets are of substantial depth. The upper half of the vertical cabinet contains a series of fixedly mounted compartments such as 13 to 15. Also in this vertical section are a plurality of removable money box-es or money compartments, such as 16, 17, 18 and 19. This vertical cabinet is adapted to be mounted on a wall or partition in a tellers cage in a bank or the like.

The horizontally extending cabinet has two side rails such as 20 and 21 which are welded to the vertical cabinet. Positioned at a distance from the vertical cabinet and between the rails is the back wall 22 of the horizontal cabinet. The cabinet is completed by forward wall 23. Within this cabinet are positioned a number of deep compartments such as 24, 25, these compartments being adapted to receive currency.

At that point, the hinge 28 becomes operative and the cover 12 is swung in an arcto a point where it totally encloses the compartments of the horizo-ntal cabinet. A lock 29 on the forward wall of the horizontal cabinet is adapted to engage the cover 27. It will be apparent that when this lock is in a closed position, the cover 27 cannot be moved pivotally upward and that the vertically sliding cover 26 will also be held in a closed position.

It will be apparent that the two covers joined together, when moved vertically, are of substantial weight and, further, that by reason of their position, diflicult to reach. It is therefore desirable to provide a counterbalance mechanism to permit them to be raised and lowered with a minimum of effort.

To secure this counteracting pressure, I have positioned a counterbalance spring 33 midway in the vertical cabinet. This counterbalance spring consists of a flexible tape around a coil spring. This tape 31 is extended downwardly and attached to a lug 30 on the bottom of the vertically slideable cover. As the two covers are lowered, the flexible tape is pulled out of its receptacle and against the pressure of the coiled spring. As the covers are pulled upwardly, it will be apparent that the coil spring will carry the greater portion of the load.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a device which permits the storage of a large quantity of coins and currency which, at the same time, will be readily available to the person using the till. The two covers may be quickly moved into a closed position and locked, at which time the contents of the cabinet will be out of sight and secure against pilferage and the like.

Although I have described a specific embodiment of my invention, it is apparent that modifications thereof may be made by those skilled in the art. Such modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a coin and currency till, a vertical cabinet, a horizontal tray positioned midway of said vertical cabinet and extending outwardly therefrom the rearwardmost wall being positioned at a spaced distance from said first cabinet to form a cavity therebetween, a cover portion slideably positioned in said vertical cabinet and positioned to be moved vertically through said cavity, a second cover portion hingedly attached to said vertical cover and adapted to pivot outwardly and downwardly to cover said horizontal tray when said vertical cover is in its uppermost vertical position, and counter-balance means mounted internally of said vertical cabinet and adapted to bias said first and second cover members upwardly in relation to said vertical cabinet to create a total enclosure of said cabinet and tray.

In a device of the type described, a vertical cabinet, a plurality of compartments in the upper half thereof the lowermost portion of said compartment forming a horiand of a size as to totally cover said compartments, said cover being hingedly attached at the inner end thereof to said first named cover, whereby said first named and second named cover may be folded into the same vertical planes, an opening between said first and second cabinet adapted to permit the vertical movement of said folded covers therethrough, and counterbalance means adapted to urge said cover members upwardly.

3. A device as set forth in claim 2, including locking means on said second cover adapted to selectively prevent the movement of said first and second cover.

4. In a device of the type described, a vertically disposed cabinet having a plurality of compartments in the upper half thereof, a cover member slideably mounted within said cabinet and adapted to enclose the compartmented portion thereof, a second cabinet disposed in a horizontal plane in spaced relation to said first named cabinet and having a plurality of compartments therein, a cover portion for said second mentioned cabinet adapted to enclose the compartmented portion thereof, said first and second cover portions being hingedly attached to each other to cause the total enclosure of said compartments in their uppermost and outwardmost position, said second cover being further adapted to nest within said first named cabinet when said cover is moved pivotally adjacent thereto, track means adapted to permit the vertical movement of said covers when in nested position, said track means being positioned internally of said first named cabinet.
