Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented aan. a5, raie.
Application led October 13, 1915. Serial No. 55,681.
.To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLARK N. LOWELL, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Bellaire, in the county of Belmont Iand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same'. A
This invention relates to locks and has for its primary object to provide a simple and eflicient lock embodying a sliding bolt and means for projecting the bolt from either end of the lock casing.
Another object is the provision of alock embodying a slidable bolt operable. by a pinion or gear Wheel adapted to be moved out of mesh With the slidable bolt and locked against rotary movement.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the no-vel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as Will be hereinafter speciiically described, claimed and illust-rated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved lock partly in section, Fig. 2-represents a vertical central sectional View therethrough, and Fig.' 3 representsa fragmental detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. '1.
Referring to the drawingin detaiLWherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the severa-l views,
lthe numeral 5 designates the body of the casing including a removable front plate 6. A plurality of bearings or supports 7 are rigidly. secured in the bottom of the casing 5 and slidably support the slidable bolt 8 adapted to be projected through apertures 8a formed in the opposite ends of the casing 5. A plurality of gear teeth 9 are formed integral With the upper edge of the bolt 8 and project upwardly therefrom. A shaft 10 is rotatably and slidably mounted in apertures 11 formed approximately at the center of the side Walls of the casing and handles or knobs 1.2 are rigidly .secured to the opposite exposed ends thereof. One end of the shaft 10 is normally retained'in extended position by the tension of a spring 13 engaged. be-
. tween the removable front plate 6 of the casing and the adjacent knob 12 and being partially inclosed by a tubular extension or sleeve 14' formed integral with the front plate 6.
A pinion or gear Wheel 15 is rigidly secured'against sliding and rotary movement upon the shaft 10 and is adapted to bel the latter may be adjusted longitudinally.
Within the casing 5. As clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, the slidable bolt is mounted adjacent one' side-Wall of the casing 5, While the gear vWheel 15 is normally retained in engagement with the opposite side Wall. or front plate 6 by the tension of the spring 13 thus retaining the pinion or gear Wheel out of mesh with the teeth 9 of the bolt.
A plurality of lugs 16 are formed integral with the front plate 6 and are so arranged that When the gear Wheel 15 is moved forwardly under the influence of the spring 13 out of mesh with the teeth of the bolt 8, the lugs 16 are received between the teeth of the gear Wheel 15, thus positively locking the latter together with the shaft 10 against rotary movement.
A locking member 17 is slidably mounted against the inner face of the removable front Wall 6 and is provided With an angular end 18 projecting forwardly through a slot 19 formed in the wall 6 whereby the locking j member may be moved longitudinally to engage or disengage the offset inner end 20 thereof With the gear wheel 15 to lock the latter out of mesh with the'teeth 9 of the bolt 8.
What l claim is:
1. A lock including a casing, a bolt slid-4 ably mounted in said-casing, a gear 'Wheel associated With said boltl for actuating the latter, means normally retaining said gear Wheel out of coperative relation' With said bolt, and means for positively locking said gear Wheel out of coperativerelation with said bolt.
2. A lock including a casing, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a shaft slidably and rotatably mounted in said casing, a gear Wheel keyed upon said shaft, and movable into and out of coperative relation -With said bolt, means normally retaining said shaft in extended position, and means for locking said gear Wheel out of coperatiyeV relation with said bolt.
3. A. lock including a casing, a bolt slidably mounted in said casing, a gear Wheel associated with' said bolt for actuatlng the lfte, mea-ns normallyqretaining said -rGrly of said Casing for positively locking 'said gear Wheel out of' ceperative relation mesme in estimony Wheref I affix my signaturem presencejolf two Witnesses.
l CLARK N', @WELL Witnesses: LAURA LOWELL FLORENQE FRY;
gear Wheel out of-copeative relation with said bolt, and means operable independently of said Retaining means and extended extewith said bolt. T
