COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming pere ef Letters Patent No. 596,164, dated December 28, 1897.
' Appiieeao nea Aprilia 1897. serial No. 631,733. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIJAH IRWIN and LAUNA IRWIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Furches, in the county of Ashe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Combination-Locks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear,l and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention has relation to keyless or combination locks; and the object is to produce a-simple and inexpensive lock of this class that shall be durable and effective, as well as reliable in operation.
To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the sa1ne,.as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particu larly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section of the front edge of a door with our improved combination-lock in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal cent-ral section. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation with the back plate and rear or inside knobremoved.
1 represents the door, and 2 the lock-case.
3 represents the knob-spindle, extending through the door and lock and through an adjustable dial-collar4 in the escutcheon diall plate 5. This spindle is provided with an integral oriixed knob 6 and adetachable knob 7, secured in place by a transverse tapering pin 8.
9 represents a transverse locking-bar fixed in the spindle and arranged to engage a shoul-A der 10, formed on the lower edge of the sliding bolt 12 to withdraw it into the case.
13 represents the limit-pin, fixed in the bolt and extending through the limit-slot 14 in the upper end of the lock-case, and by removing the limit-pin 13, withdrawing the bolt and insertin g it in the alined guideway in the opposite end of the case and replacing the limit-pin 13 in the slot 14 the lock can be changed from a right to a left hand lock, and vice versa.
15 represents a swinging button pivoted at one end by the screw 16 to the lock-case midway between the slots 14 14', and it may be thrown around in either direction into the path of the limit-pin 13 to prevent the lock being opened from the outside, even though a person hasvthe combination.
17 and 1S represent the tumbler-spindles, provided with the diallknobs 19 and 220, and 21 22 represent the rotary tumblers, provided with the radial notches 23 23, and they are adjustably secured on said spindles by the set-screws 24 24. said notches must be brought into alinement with the locking-bari) on the lock-spindle 3 to allow said spindle to be pulled forward in the lock and the 'bar 9 projected into the path of the bolt to engage the shoulder 10 and withdraw, the bolt.
25 represents the bolt-spring, iixed in the horizontal groove 26, and its ends abut against the inner ends of the plungers 27 27, one of which comes in contact with the shoulder 2S on the bolt to project it after it has been withdrawn and released by the bar 9. 4
29 represents a collar on the rear lock-plate, and it is provided With two alined radial grooves 30 30, in one of which is secured a sliding button 31, secured in place by a set-screw 32, passing through a slot in said button, and when the spindle is adjusted to unlockthe doorA the end of this sliding button projects into a circumferential recess 33 in the hub of the knob 7 to secure the spindle against longitudinal movement, and consequently the lock corresponds to an ordinary spring-lock. When it is desired to convert it into a cornbination-lock, the button 31 is released from the recess 33 in the knob 7 and the spindle pushed back, so that the locking-bar 9 will be Withdrawn from the path of the bolt and allowed to revolve on the opposite side of the tumblers.
By loosening the set-screws 24 the tumblers may be adjusted on their spindles to change their relative positions to their knobs 19 and 20, and thus -alter the combination at will. Also the collar 4 on the spindle 3 may be adj usted by means of its set-screw 34 and thus vary the relation between the scale on said collar and the position of the bar 9 on said spindle, thus providing a third element in the combination.
It will thus be seen that roo Although We have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement Of the several elements of our invention, We do not desire t0 be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of Our invention Without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combination-lock, comprising the lockcase 2, the reversible bolt I2, the spindle 3, mounted in said case and having a rotary and an end motion and provided with the trans versc lockiug-bar 9, a dial-collar/t, adj ustabl y secured on said spindle, in combination with the fixed escutchcon dial-plate 5, the rotating tumbler-spindles I7 and I8, provided with dial-knobs I9 and 20, and the rotary tumblers 2l 22 adjustably secured on said spindles 17 and 1S by the set-screws 24, and provided with the radial notches 23, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof We hereunto affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
