Description
l W. KUCK.
y Permutation Lacks. N0. 145,191. Patentedfla n.6, 874.. 'l Je' n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILHELM'KOOK, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERMUTATlON-LOCKS.
Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 146,191, dated January 6, 1871i; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM Kock, of Cincinnati, in the, county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Permutation-Lock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents afront elevation of my improved permutationlock, showing dial-plate and knob; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section ofthe same. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional rear elevations, 4showing the lock, respectively7 in closed and open position; Figs. 5 and 6, detail front and side elevations of the tumblers, showing their setting mechanism. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the pendulum-lever, showing manner of releasing the pivoted fencelever; and Fig.
` 8 is a side view of the cylindrical bolt with recessed face-disk, into which the safe-bolt passes for opening the door.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
\ In the drawing, A represents the case of the permutationlock, which is applied inthe usual manner to the safe, vault, or other door. It is provided with a knob, B, and face dial-plate, which is marked with letters, numerals, or other signs, and turns on a washer-plate, B', with the index-marks for operating the tumblers which are set thereon. The spindle C of the dial-plate B passes through the outer faceplate of the safe-door, and turns freely in a tube, a, to which the iianged bushings b are keyed. rlhe tumblers D turn freely on bushings b, the hanged part thereof keeping them at the required distance from cach other. Each tumbler D is made of three concentric ringsan inner ring, (1, which turns in a wider outer one, d1, and is retained therein by the third top ring, d?. The top ring d2 isV applied to the outer ring d1 by two screws, e, which are placed near together at one side thereof, so that the other side acts like a band-sprin g on the lower rings. A pin, c1, is applied to the inner side of top spring-ring d2, so as to fit into the perforations e2 of inner ring d, which are arranged along the circumference of the same. The inner ring d is furthermore supplied with a projecting pin or tooth, f, which slides in a circular groove of the adj onin g tumbler, formed by top ring d2 and innerring d, and acts 'on a pivoted tongue, f'. The tongue f' is applied, by means of a screw-pivot, into a recess of the shoulder ofthe inner ring d on that side opposite to pin f, and only allowed to swing far enough to either side that the pin f of the next tumbler D assumes a position radial and central to the pivoted part of tongue f', whether acting thereon from the right or left side. The pins j' of tumblers D are in the same axis when all are brought to act on the tongues f' of the adjoining tumblers. Each tumbler is provided at its circumference with a dovetailed recess,
h, between screws e, and is also provided, diametrically opposite to it, in the buter ring dl, with a recess, h', into which the wedge-shaped tooth El of lever E enters, so as to lift the top ring d? and disconnect the perforated inner ring d, for adjustment-to the letters selected for the combination. Lever E has as many teeth El as there aretumblers in the lock, land is pivoted to a standard, F, cast to case A, and operated by a pivoted knob, E2, the stem of which slides in a slot, i, of the case A, and is firmly secured in said slot t' by a projecting lug, i', when not in use. The revolving driving-wheel Gr is `rigidly screwed to the end of spindle O by topmwasher-plate l1 and screw '12.
Wheel G is also `provided with a pin, f, which y acts in similar manner on the first tumbler D -as the other tumblers on each other. A circumferential groove, m,`in wheel G serves to admit a small anch or-shaped pendulum, a, pivoted to the end of lever H in such a manner that it does not come in contact with the inner circumference of groove m.
the extension-arm ofboltlever L, whose central ringshaped part turns on a shoulder, p, of wheel Gr, while its opposite arm engages, by a slotted downward extension, L', the guidepin q of bolt M. shape, and carries, at right angles to it, the
tapering fence I', which enters the dovetailed recesses hl of tumblers D. Its fore part slides Two cross-pins, Y n', Fig. 7 (of which one is a rear extension` of Thelever I is of curved easily on check-lug o, while its lioolnshaped projection 0^ passes along the circumference of wheel G, and enters the recess r of the saine, when fence I enters the tumbler-recesses h, and check-lug o releases its end. The wheel G, and with it boltllever L, is then carried forward and bolt vM turned. Bolt M turns in standard F, and with its disk-shaped face M in a circular opening of the side plate of case A. A recess, s, for the main bolt of the safe door, extends from the face-disk into the solid part thereof, and allows the entering of the door-bolt when the lock is in open position. The exact position and motion of the tacerecesses s are defined by the slotted extension L', which slides on the upper surface of stand ard F.
For opening the lock, the dial-knob is turned in one direction till the pin of driving-wheel engages the tongue of the rst tumbler, the pin of thefirst tumbler the tongue of the sec ond, and so on until all the tumblers are in motion. The dial-plate is then set with the first letter selected to the index-mark, carried thence in opposite direction to the second letter, and so on alternately in opposite directions till the tumblers are in position for ad inittin g the fence of the fence-lever. The driving-wheel is then set so that the pendulum rests upon the cross-pins; then lifting, by a return motion of the knob, the pendulum-lever and releasing the fence-lever, which engages mais! the driving-wheel and rotates thc bolt-lever and bolt, bringing the recess of the face-disk into position to receive the bolt of the safedoor.
The lock may be set to any combination of letters on the dial-plate by placing the tumblers into their position, as described, by using, instead of the index-mark, which is vertically above the dial-plate, the side niark, which brings `the recesses of the tumblers under the spring-rings in position for the action of the wedge-lever, and allows the entering of the wedge-teeth' and the changing of the tumblers to any desired combination of letters. The wedge-lever is then withdrawn and the lock opened on the index-mark.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rlhe combination of the revolving drivingwheel G with the pendulum-lever H n and fence-lever I, to release the same for acting on the bolt-lever at the required time, substantially in the manner described.
2. The driving-wheel G, having groove m, cross-pins n', and recess it', for throwing up the pendulumdever and engaging the fence-lever,
as described.
