CHURCHILL G. GRAVES, OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.
WARDROBE-TRUNK.
Application filed April 12, 1918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHURCHILL G. GRAVES,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of'Virginia, have invented certain new and f tion, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the drawers, as constructed for and'forming a part of the present invention: Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view showing the interior construction of the trunk body: Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section of the trunk body with a drawer in place in it: Fig. 1 is a partial front elevational view of the trunk with one drawer in place: Fig. 5 is a plan view of the drawer removed from the trunk: Fig. 6 is a similar view of a modified form of drawer: Fig. 7 is a broken view in vertical section of the trunk showing a modified form of the locking mechanism.
Referring now to these drawings the trunk body, which is formed to stand upon its end, is made with sides 1. a back 2, and a top 3. The lower or bottom portion of the body, which is of the usual construction, is broken away in the drawings. The front of the body portion is open, it being the intention that this invention shall form the one-half of an ordinary wardrobe trunk. The sides of the body are provided with suitably spaced runners or drawer slides 4 which may be riveted to the sides. Drawers such as 5 are provided to slide inwardly from the open front of the body upon the slides 11.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide means in connection with the body for locking the drawers in place. To this end there is provided near the upper end of one of the sides 1 and upon its inner face a lever 6 which is fulcrumed at 7 to the trunk side. To the inner face of the back 2 of the trunk is pivoted at 8 a second lever 9,
the adjacent ends of the levers 6 and 9 being Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Serial No. 228,248.
operatively connected at 10, the inner end of the lever 6 being bent at an angle to coincide with the plane of the lever 9. To the opposite end of the lever 9 at 11 is operatively connected a central depending bar or lock rod 12, this rod having a vertical movement within the guides 18 which are attached to the back of the trunk. Attached to the rod 12 are a series of clips or lock pins 11, one being supplied for each drawer.
The drawers are made with a cut or recess 15 in the back, this being formed by cutting away a portion of the back at the center of the drawer. To close up the back over this cut there is supplied a bowed metal plate 16 which is attached to the inner face of the back and connects the free ends of the cut therein. This plate is bowed thus to provide working space for the clip 14. Extending across the cut in the back is a lock plate 17 which further stiffens the back and forms an engaging means or locking plate for the clip 1 In operation the outer end of the lever 6 is depressed which, through the lever 9 depresses the locking bar 12. The drawers are slid in place and the outer end of the lever 6 is raised, thus raising the locking bar 12 and entering the clips 14 behind the lock plates 17 on the drawers. For finally locking the entire device a key-lock 18 is pivoted to the outer end of the lever 6, this being so arranged that it may be swung over the front of one of the drawers and locked thereto. `When the key-lock 18 is swung outward it forms a handle or extension for the lever 6, it being approximately flush with the front face of the drawer when closed.
In Fig. 6 is shown how the drawers ma be made without cutting away the back, the entire back 19 in this embodiment being bowed inwardly to give the necessary clearance for the clip 1&1. The hasp 2O performs the same functions as the lock plate 17.
In Fig. 7 is shown how the locking bar may be operated from the exterior of the trunk, this bar 21 passing directly through the upper head of the trunk and the lock 22 seating in and being locked to the head of the trunk. In this modification the lock pins or clips such as 23 are turned downward instead of upward as in the first e1nbodiment.
It will be understood that various modifications and changes may be made in this invention within the scope of the appended claim Without departing from the Spirit thereof.
IVhat is claimed is:
In a Wardrobe trunk, a body having an open front, a plurali@v of slidably supported drawers mounted therein, each of said drawers having a pocket in its rear Wall with a locking plate extending thereacross, a veiticallyv movable locking bar extending verticallyY along the rear of the drawers, the Same carrying locking members adapted to move Within the Said pockets and to Seat, at one position of the bar, in front of the locking plates, and means for actuating the locking bar, the same including a lever fulcrumed to the rear Wall of the trunk, With its inner end pivotally connected t0 the said locking bar, a second lever ulcrumed to a side Wall of the trunk and With its inner end pivoted to the outer end of the liret inentioned lever, and means carried by the outer end of the second mentioned lever for looking the same to one of the drawers when the locking members are in engagement with lthe locking plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHURCHILL G. GRAVES.
