To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, LUCIAN RosnxwALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a speciln the accompanying drawing, whichl illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of my improved box, shown set up for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the saine. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same. Fig. 4f is a plan view of the body shown collapsed. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the body shown collapsed. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the body is made.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
ln the following description and claims, the term sides includes the ends of the box.
1, 9., 3 and. i designate the sides of the box flexibly connected with each other at the corners of the body of the box by flexible joints 5. The side 1 is composed, preferably of two members 6 and 7 which overlap and are securedy to each other, and which embrace Abetween them a flap 3 flexibly connected to one longitudinal edge of the bottom 9, 'the opposite edge of which is j flexibly connected to the lower edge of the side 9.. The sides 3 and t are respectively provided with vertical Hexible joints 10, each disposed intermediate of the adjacent corners of the body. rlhe free end edges of the bottom 9 have respectively flexibly connected to them two flaps 11 which, when the body is extended, as shown in Figs. l,
2 and 3,. are adapted tobe extended upwardly outside of the body and to be respectively folded over the upper edges of the sides 3 and 4, and then extended downwardly in the body to the bottom 9 and then bent inwardly and extended along the bottom to a position in which the flaps 11 will overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 1. The flaps l1 may be provided respectively with transyerse joints l2, 13 and 14, formed by creasing or scoring, and respectively disposed where the flaps are connected to the bottom 9; where the flaps are folded over the upper edges of the sides 3 and el; and where the daps are bent inwardly at the bottom 9. The bottom 9 is provided with a flexible joint l5 which, when the body is either extended or folded, is in alinement with, that is, in the plane of the flexible joints l0 in the ends 3 and f1. The flaps 11 are each provided with a longitudinal dexible joint 16, which is disposed in alinement with the ' joints 10 and 15. rlhe provision of the joints 5 at the corners of the body, the
flexible connection between the longitudinal edges of the bottom and the sides 1 and 2, the joints l0, 15 and 16, and the joints 13 permit the box to be folded to the fiat form shown in Figs. 4- and 5.
ln forming the box from the blank shown in Fig. 6, the flap 8 and side 2 are first bent to a vertical position at their connection with the bottom 9. The sides 3 and fl, carrying the side portions G and 7, which form the side l, are then swung on the joints 5 at right angles and adjacent to the ends of the bottom 9.k Ilhe portions 6 and '.7 are then swung on the joints 5, which connect them to the sides e and 3, to positions parallel with the side 2 and at opposite sides of the liap 3, said portions 6 and 7 being then secured in any suitable manner, as by stapling or (3e-inenting, to the flap 8 and to each other. T he flaps 11 are then folded upwardly along the joints 12, and then folded along the joints 13 over the upper edges of the sides 3 and l, and then extended vertically to the bottom 9 along the inner sides of the body, and then bent inwardly along the joints l-i, so as to rest upon the bottom 9. Preferably the flaps 11 have sufficient length. when so positioned to overlap eachother, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The iiaps 11 serve to strengthen the bottom 9 and to prevent its being bent along the joint 15. They also serve to strengthen the sides 3 and e and to prevent bendir.g of said sides along the joints 10.

The bcdy may be provided with suitable inlets for ail', as, for example, by providing notches 18 in the upper edges of the sides 1y and 2, which permit air to enter the. box when it is mounted in a pile with others.
1n disassembling the box for storage or shipment empty, the removable bottom 17 is taken out, after which the flaps 11 are extended horizontally at opposite ends of the bottom 9, after which the box maybe collapsed to flat form by folding the sides 3 and Llalong thejoints 10, the cornerjoints 5 permitting this, and by folding the bottom 9 and flaps 11 along the joints 15 and 16, after which the'flaps may each be folded onto itself along the joint 13. The box will now be in the collapsed flat form shown in Figs. l and 5.
The box, with the exception of the removable bottom 17, may be made from a single strip of material, such as card board or sheet wood, as shown in Fig. G. l/Vhen so made, longitudinal slits 19, in alineinent with the flexible connection between the bottom 9`and the side 2, are provided in the strip from the ends' of the portions 6 and 7 respectively to the flexible joints 5 respectively at opposite ends of the side 2. |The flaps are thus separated from the side portions 7 and 3 and d and 6 respectively. By means of this construction, very little Waste of'material is required and such permanent fastenings as may be needed can be effected in a single operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters vPatent, is Y 1. A' folding box comprising a body having sides flexibly connected with each other, two opposite sides having each intermediate ofthe adjacent corners a vertical flexible joint, a bottom flexibly connected at opposite edges with two sides and having a flexible joint disposed in alinement with said vertical flexible joints, and two flaps respectively flexibly connected to opposite edges of said bottom* and adapted vto be extended u'pwardly and folded over the upper Y By having the flaps 11 overlap the upper edges of the sides 3 and l, the

2. A folding box comprising a body hav-y ing sides flexibly connected with each other, two opposite s1 des having each intermediate of the adjacent corners a vertical flexible jont, a bottom flexibly connectedV at opposite edges with two other sides respectively and having a flexible joint extending between opposite edges in alinement with said vertical joints, and twoflaps respectively flexibly connected to opposite edges of said i ing sides exibly connected with each other site edges respectively with two other opposing sides and having a flexible joint extending between two other opposite edges in 'alinement with said vertical flexible joints,
' and: two flaps respectively flexibly connected to the edges at which terminates the flexible joint of the bottom, said flaps having'respec- Y tively flexible joints in alinement with the flexible joint of the bottom, and being adapted to be extended upwardly and' folded over the upper edges ofthe sides having said vervtical joints.
4. A folding boxcomprising a body lhaving sides flexibly connected with each other,
two opposite sides having each a vertical flexible joint intermediate of the adjacent corners, a bottom having two opposite edges respectively exibly connected with two other sides and having a flexible joint extending between two other edges in alinement with said vertical joints, two flaps respectively flexibly connected with opposite edges of said bottom Vand adapted to be extended upwardly and to be folded over the upper edges respectively of the sides having said vertical joints, and a removable bottom member adapted to be fitted in sai-d body and to rest iiponsaid bottom.
