MARTIN R. CROSSMAN, OE' BOSTGN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Marcil-POCKET.
Application filed January 23, 1915.
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, Malerin B. Cnosstian, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an lmprovement in Match-Pockets, of which theV following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specication, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to match pockets, such as are adapted to be attached to the clothing, and it has for its object to provide a novel match pocket which can be securely fastened to the vest or any other part of the clothinv', which can be worn without inconvenience, and which will securely hold the matches. while at the same time having provision for scratching them, and which hasI other novel features, all as will be more fully hereinafter described and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings wherein l have illustrated a selected embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved match pocket secured in position on a mans vest; Fig. 2 is a front view of the match pocket; Fig. 3 is a section on the line x-w, Fig. 2; Fig. 4L is a section on the line y/-3/, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a view of the match-scratching element removed.
My improved match safe comprises a body portion 1 of leather' or any other suitable material which folded over at its lower end, as at f2, to form the match-receiving pocket 3, the edges 4 of the foldedover portion being fastened together by stitching or otherwise. Situated in front of the pocket 3 is a match-scratching member which may be of any suitable material adapted to light either safety, parlor or ordinary sulfur matches. rlliis matchscratching member 5 is preferably of comparatively stiff but resilient material, such, for instance, as sheet metal, and if desired one portion 6 thereof may be provided with a match-scratching composition adapted to ignite the so-called safety match, while another portion 7 thereof may be simply roughened thereby to provide for scratching a sulfur match or a parlor match.
S designates a cover member which overlies the match-scratching member and isl provided with a central opening 9 through which a portion of the match-scratching Specification of Letters Patent.

member is accessible. rllhis member 8 may be made of any suitable material and it covers the edges of the match-scratching member and gives a more or less ornamental finish to the front of the device.
My improved match pocket is adapted to be detachably secured to some part of the clothing, such, for instance, as a gentlemans vest, and l have provided herein means for attaching the match pocket to the clothing, which means also serves for holding the match-scratching member and the finishing cover member S in position. The attaching means herein shown are in the form of pins 10 adapted to extend through the match pocket and through the garment to which the device is to be secured, said pins being provided with fixed heads 11 and with removable heads 12. These pins 10 are preferably inserted through the device so that the fixed heads l1 appear on the exterior surface thereof, and said pins 10 extend through the protective or finishing cover 8 and through notches 13 formed in the ends of the match-scratching member 5. Both the match-scratching member and the protective cover are preferably curved slightly, as shown. The advantage of this construction is that itenables the device to lie closely against the body and also serves to hold the matches in the pocket. rlhe device can be readily applied to a persons vest or his coat by simply removing the detachable heads 12 from the pins and then insertingl the pins through the vest or other article of clothing, and subsequently applying the removable heads 12 to the pins again. These removable heads are provided with clamping jaws 14 adapted to engage in a groove 15 formed in the pin. rlhe jaws are connected to a portion 16 accessible from the end of the head 12 so that by withdrawing this portion 16 slightly the gripping of the jaws is released and the head can be removed.
I have also illustrated a pin cushion with my match safe, thus making the article an extremely handy one for any gentleman to carry. This pin cushion is shown at 20 and will preferably be situated immediately beneath the pocket 3. The pin cushion can be formed in any suitable way, and it is provided with an attaching tab 21 which extends up between the front 2 and the matchscratching member 5, the upper edge of the tab being sewed or otherwise secured to the edge of the front 2. This pin cushion member and its tab can be of some color Whiching placed either on the protective cover 8,
or on the pin cushion portion, or on the body portion above the pocket, thus making the device in the nature of an advertising novelty.
I claim:
l. A match pocket comprising a body member having a matclrreceiving pocket therein, a match-scratching memberl overlying the body member, a cover member overlying the match-scratching member and provided with a cent 'al opening through which the latter is accessible, and means for detachably securing the match pocket to an article of clothing, said means operating to Copies of this patent may be obtained for hold the match-scratching member and cover member in position. v
2. A match pocket comprising a body member having a match-receiving pocket therein, a match-scratching member overlying the body member, a cover member over lying the match-scratching member and provided with a central opening through which the latter is accessible, and attaching pins extending through the cover member and body member by Which the device is attached to an article oi' clothing, said pins engaging the match-Scratching member and holding the latter-in position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to thisspeciication, in the presence ot t\vo subscribing Witnesses.
