Attorney United States. Patent BATHING CAPS WITH DECORATIVE POCKETS.
' FOR COMBS on THE LIKE Henry H. Kahn, New York, N Y. Application May 17, 1954, Serial No. 430,239
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-68) The present invention relates to improvements inheadwear such as caps and, more specifically, to a new and improved bathing cap with a pocket adapted for holding small articles.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a bathing cap of the character described which has a longitudinal pocket arranged and shaped in such a manner as to give the cap a novel, highly attractive appearance, and which pocket also is constructed in such a manner that it can hold safely a comb, or any other preferably longitudinal articles, so that said article or articles are always available for immediate use and cannot be lost even while surf bathing or while diving into the water from a high diving board.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a bathing cap of the character described which has a pocket that is normally closed but whose contents are readily accessible even without removing the cap from the head of the wearer.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a bathing cap of the character described which does not require complicated or expensive molds or vulcanization processes for providing the cap with a pocket, but whose pocket consists of a longitudinal strip of material three edges of which are secured to the outer side of the cap by any suitable means, so that my new and improved cap can be manufactured inexpensively with the same facilities as are used for the making of ordinary bathing caps.
Yet still another object of the present invention is the provision of a bathing cap of the character described which has the pocket shaped as a longitudinal fin protruding at a substantial height beyond the top surface of the cap and extending from the rear to the front portion thereof intermediate the side portions of the cap, so as to serve as a guiding fin for diving into deep Water from high altitudes, thus serving as .an aid for certain water acrobatics.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; and,
Fig. 3 is a detailed enlarged sectional view of a pocket on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 1 denotes a conventional bathing cap of rubber, plastic material, or the like having a front portion 2, a rear portion 3 and side portions 4 to which a neck strap 5 is secured in the usual well known manner. 'That portion of the cap 1 which intermediate the side portions 4 extends from the front portion 2 to the rear portion 3 I prefer to call a crown portion.
'Incarrying out my invention a longitudinal strip 7 of a material which may be the same as the material of which consists the cap 1, or any other suitable material, is folded along its longitudinal center section and has its longitudinal side edge portions 10 as Well as the lower section of its rear edge portion 11 secured to the outer side of the cap 1 by vulcanization, or plastic welding, or the like. The upper sections of the rear edge portion 11 are joined to each other, and a major section of the front edge portion of the strip 7 is left open so as to form an opening 12. The edge portions 10 preferably are secured to longitudinal sections of the crown portion of the cap 1. Said longitudinal sections preferably are equally spaced from the center of the cap 1 and extend from the rear portion 3 to the front portion 2, so that the strip 7 forms with the cap a longitudinal pocket which in cross-section has the shape of an equilateralacute-angled triangle, as may be seen in Fig. 1. This cross-sectional formation is well adapted for receiving a comb 14, as is indicated in dash-and-dotted lines in Fig. 2. The comb 14 in this pocket will not lie flat on the cap- 1 but will rest on its teeth or on its back upright, and thus will act as a reinforcement of the pocket formed by the sheet 7, so that the same will constitute a stiff fin, which serves for guiding a person while diving or carrying out certain water acrobatics.
The opening 12 can be closed by any suitable closure means, such as a slide fastener, one or more buttons or snap fasteners, or the like. I have found it most practical, convenient, inexpensive to manufacture, and attractive in outer appearance to provide as closure means for the opening 12 a flap portion 15, which preferably is triangular and extends from a front section of the strip 7. The flap portion 15 can be folded over the opening 12, for closing the same and can be kept in a closed position by means of a snap fastener 20, or by any other wellknown fastening means.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a head covering body having crown, front, rear and side portions; a longitudinal member having the form of an inverted V in cross-section and having a closed end portion as Well as an open end portion and longitudinally curved lateral edge portions secured to said head covering body along lines extending from the front portion thereof across the crown portion to the rear portion, so that the longitudinal member forms with the head covering body an upstanding hollow pocket member; a flap portion extending from one side of the open end portion of said longitudinal member and being adapted to be folded across said open end portion; and complementary fastening means on said flap portion and on said longitudinal member for detachably keeping the flap portion in a position in which it closes said open end portion.
2. A bathing cap comprising a head covering body having a front portion and a rear portion as well as side portions and a crown portion being located intermediate said side portions and being extended from said front portion to saidrear portion, a longitudinal strip of material folded along its longitudinal center section having longitudinal edge. portions and end portions, said longitudinal edge portions being secured to the outer side of the cap along lines extending from the front portion of said head covering body across the crown portionto the rear portion of-said body, said longitudinal stripformi ng with said head covering body an upstanding hollow pocket member closed at one end and open .at its other end, a flap extending from one side of said pocket member and being: adapted to be folded across the open end thereof, and. complementary fastening/means on. said flap and on said longitudinal strip for detachably closing the open. endtof said pocket member. I
3.. A device of the character described comprising a head covering body having a front portion and-a rear portion as well as side portions and a crown portion which is located intermediate said sideportions zand which extndsfrom said front. portion to said rear portion; a pocket member having a pair of longitudinal sections joined to each other at one longitudinal edge. as Well as at one end thereof. and being secured with their other longitudinalcdges to said head covering body along'a 25 $1,426
4 ofsubst'antially parallel lines extending" over said body from the front portion thereof across the crown portion to the rear portion; said pocket member having also a flap portion extending from a first one of said longitudinal sections of the pocket member at that end thereof which is opposite to the end at which the longitudinal sections of the pocket member are joined to each other and being adapted to befolded over from the end of said first longitudinal section to the second one of said longitudinal sections was "to close that end of said pocket member at" which said longitudinal sections thereof are unattached to eachother; and means for detachably holding said flap portion in a position in which it closes saidlas't-m'entioned end.
