ANTHONY B. SWEETLAND, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T() HIMSELF AND JAMES DALEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR VENTILATORS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,774, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY B. SWEETLAND, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Adjusting Railroad-Gar and other Windows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exa-ct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain devices for adjusting and keeping in any desired position car or other windows, as will be hereinafter setV forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed Figure l is a front view of my improved-window. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the window open for ventilation; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the device for locking the window.
A represents the frame of the car-window, to
. one side of which frame is hinged a second light frame, B. Inside ot' this frame B, on the nothinged or outer side, is hinged the window C. The outer edge of the .window C is looked to the inner or hinged side of the frame B in the following manner, whether the window is closed or opened to a certain angle: In the window-sash is made a recess, a, over which is placed a slotted plate, b. Through this slot is inserted the end of a device, D, for llocking the window. This device is made of wire, the main part forming two parallel rods a suitable distance apart, at one end of which is formed a circle, d, with a curved dividing-wire, e, through said circle from the end of the lower of the two parallel rods. At the other end of this device D is formed a bow, f, upward, and then the wires are connected together, as shown in Fig. 3. The circle d is passed through the slot in the plate b, and that part of the circle below the dividing-wire' e has inside of said plate a ring, l1., placed loosely on it, so that the entire device D is prevented from coming out of said plate, but still allowed to move up and down. It will also be noticed that that part of the plate b which is slotted is curved slightly outward. The device I) is then passed over a headed screw, 7c, in the frame B, as shown. It will readily be seen that the windowG, being closed in the frame B, becomes securely locked by turning the device D downward, as one part of the circle d is held by the ring h., while the screw k is inside of the same circle, but on the other side of the dividing-wire e, there being at the now upper end of said wire a bend in which said screw drops, or rather which bend drops over said screw. llo open the window the device D must first be slightly raised to remove this bend from the screw k and then raised, when the window is opened, so far that the bow j' will drop or be pressed down on the screw 7c when the window becomes securely locked at a certain angle. In precisely the same manner the outer edge of the frame B is fastened, either opened or closed, to the main frame A. By this means the window may be opened in whichever direction the car may move, so as to prevent dust, smoke, dto., from entering the car, although free ventilation is, at the same time, secured. Both the frameB and window C may be thrown open, in which case the window will stand out from and parallel with the car.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The device D formed of two parallel wires with circle d and dividing-wire e at one end and bow f 'at the other, in combination with the slotted plate b, ring h, and screw 7c, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the window-frame A, auxiliary frame B, window C, device D, plate b, and screw k, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
