UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ALTEMILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MEYER A. STEIN.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,344, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed April 11, 188:3. (No model.)
To all whom Lt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALTEMILLER, 'of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shutter- Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved shutter-fastener for lockin g the shutters when the same are closed.
The invention consists in a pair of hookjaws pivoted in the sill-plate of the windowframe and separated by springs, between the rear ends of which jaws a cam-block is located for separating the jaws, which cam-block is attached to a shaft provided with a handle at the inner longitudinal edge of the sill-plate. A staple projecting from the inner surface of one of the shutters is caught and held by the jaws whereby the shutter is locked, and by turning the cam-block the jaws will be separated and the shutters released. Springs for turning or swinging the shutters outward are attached to the outer longitudinal edge of the sill-plate.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a cross-sectional elevation of a window-sill containing my improved shutter- *fastener. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a. longitudinal elevation of one of the pivoted hookjaws of the shutter-fastener. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cam-block for separating the hook-jaws for releasing the shutter.
Two jaws, A, provided at the front ends "with hooks B, are crossed and pivoted to a bed-plate, G, the jaws resting flat on each other. Springs D, whichare secured on the bed-plate 0, press against the rear ends of the jaws, and thus press both the front and rear ends of these jaws toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2. This bed-plate O is secured in the bottom of a recess, E, in the sill-plate F of a window-frame in such a manner that the hook ends will be near the front longitudinal edge of this sill-plate F. A beveled cam-block, G, which has a rhomboidal or lozenge shaped cross-section, is attached to the end of a shaft, H, jonrnaled in the sill-plate 1*, the other end of this shaft projecting from the inner longitudinal edge of the sill-plate and being provided with a suitable handle, J, for turning this shaft H. The cam-block G is located between the rear ends of the jaws A, which are provided at their rearends with vertical flanges K, against which the cam-block H rests. An apertured lug or staple, L, is attached to the inner surface of the shutter, M, which overlaps the other shutter, M, which. staple is adapted to pass into the recess E and between the hooks of the jaw A, the plane of the staple being at right angles to the planes of the jaws A. Springs N, of any suitable construction, are attached to the outer longitudinal edge of the sill-plate F, and serve to throw the shutter open when the staple L is released from the jaws A.
The operation is as follows: If the shutters are closed the staple L passes in between the jaws A and separates them. The springs D press the jaws together and press the hooks B through the opening in the staple L, thereby holding and locking the shutters closed. The springs N ale pressed fiat against the outer longitudinal edge of the sillplate F by the shutters. If the shutters are to be opened the handle J is turned, whereby the cam-block G will be turned and will separate the jaws, thereby releasing the staple L. The springs N then press the shutters outward and they swing open. The shutters can thus be opened from the room without requiring the window to be opened, and this look cannot be opened or tampered with from the outside. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shutter fastener having hook-jaws cross-pivoted to a bed-plate, and springs D D, 0 arranged to bear on the outer rear ends of said jaws, whereby both the front and rear of jaws are simultaneously pressed toward each other, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the cross pivoted 5 hook'jaws having vertical flanges, K, of the end-beveled block G, rhomboidal in shape and arranged on the end of a hand-rod, H, as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES ALTEMIILLEB.
