Description
EDWARD REUKAUF, or PHILADELP IA, PENNSYLVANIA.
M N AI m' xen GOODS. Y
To all whom it'mag conccrn':
Be it lrnown that I, EDWARD REUKAUna citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certainlmprovements in Supplemental Lids for Boxed Goods, of which the following is a specification. f is My invention relatesto display covers for boxed goods; and the object of my. invention is to provide an improvedform of structure, designed more particularly .for .use with cigar boxes, although capable of use with other boxes.
One important object of my, invention is to provide'a structure which can be readily connected to the lid of a box,,while a further object is to provide a structure that may be looked to the box and its cover so that the supplemental covercan not. be
lifted.
These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a supplemental box cover and its attaching means, made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, is a detached perspective View in the reverse position of attaching means employed at one end of the cover; Fig. 3, is a detached perspective View in the reverse position of attaching means employed at the other end of thecover, showing also the locking element; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line 4.1, Fig. 1, and Fig. 5, is a. sectional view on the line 55, Fig. 1.
The structure forming the subject of my invention comprises a frame 1, preferably of metal, of the same or substantially the same size as the box, which frame has recessed edges receiving a transparent plate 2, usually of glass. Such frame may also have a front overhanging edge or apron 3, as shown in Fig. 4, and may be flanged at its ends, as indicated at 4:, in Fig. 5, so as to rest over the side edges of the box.
At the back, the frame may be provided with a suitable supporting member, which may be a longitudinal flange 5, having upper and lower turned edges 6 and 7 for the reception of a plate 8 upon which the name of the cigar or other advertising matter may be placed.
Adapted to slide with respect to the rear support are box-lid engaging pieces 11 and- 8 AM @WC- v Specification of Letters Patent. Paten'ter1Jan.4,'1916. Application filed January 30, 1914.. serial n5. 215,515. I I
12, both of which have slotted portions 11 j andf 12? whereby they may be retained byrivets or pins 13 and 14 carried by said rear support 5. v
lVhen it is desired to place the structure upon a box lid, the members 11 and12, are 1 it pulled out, as indicated by dotted lines. The supplemental cover or lidis then placed upon the box, and then the said pieces- '11 and 12 are pushed intofplace, and the supplemental, cover is in proper position with respect tothelid and box. These pieces 11 and 12 are preferably bent,'as indicated, so
1 as to have frictional engagement with the cover.
It will be understood, of course, that short supports at each end of the supplemental cover may be provided for the slidable members ll and 12 thus obviating the necessity of having the member 5 as a continuous piece across the full width 'of'the supplementalcovenf Cover boxes of thistype are frequently employed in cigar stores where constant attendance is impossible, and 1n such instances it is often desirableto' lock the box. against theft. For this purpose, I may pivot to the slidable piece'll en'gag-ing the cover or lid .of the box, a bar 15 which is normally swung into a substantially horizontal position against the back of the box lid when it is desired to leave the supplemental lid or cover in a freely operable position. This bar may be swung. on its pivot and when down, as shown in Fig. 1, the supplemental cover will be locked to the box and its lid against independent movement. This locking member has .a-stilf pivotal connection with the member 11 so that sufficient friction is present to insure it being held in the different positions.
The flanges 3 and 4 covering the edges of the box insure a close contact therewith and make a substantially dust-proof cover. "Iclaimz. A
1. In a supplemental cover for boxes, the combination of a frame carrying a transparent plate, .a grooved wall carried by said frame substantially at right angles thereto, and box-lid v engaging members slidably mounted with respect to said. grooved wall.
2. In a supplemental cover for boxes, the combination of a frame carrying a transparent plate, a grooved wall carried by said frame substantially at right angles thereto, and clamping members slidably mounted with respect to said grooved wall and movable into clamping engagement With the lid of the box carrying such frame.
8. In a supplemental cover for boxes, the combination of a frame carrying a transparent plate, a grooved supporting Wall carried by said frame, and lid-engaging members slidably mounted With respect to said grooved Wall.
4. In a supplemental cover for boxes, the combination of a frame carrying a transparent plate, a rear flanged support carried by said frame, and secured substantially at right angles thereto, and lid-engaging members slidably mounted With respect to said flanged support.
5. T he combination, in a supplemental cover for boxes, of a frame carrying a transparent plate, flanges carried by said frame and overlying the edges of the box, an up standing grooved supporting Wall secured to and disposed substantially at right angles to said frame at the rear of the same, and clamping members slidably mounted in said grooved supporting Wall for engagement With the box lid.
6. The combination With a box and a lid thereof of a supplemental cover operatively connected to saidlid, and a pivotally mounted arm forming a locking member carried by said cover for engagement With the box to prevent movement of the lid or the supplemental cover.
7. The combination, in a supplemental cover for boxes, of a frame carrying a transparent plate, an upstanding flanged support substantially at right angles to said frame at the rear of the same, slidable members carried by said flange for engagement With the.
box lid, and a pivotally mounted arm forming a locking member.
8. The combination of a supplemental cover, a supporting Wall at the rear of the same, clamping members slidably mounted with respect to said supporting Wall for engagement with the box lid, and a pivotally mounted arm forming a locking member carried by one of said slidable members.
9. In a supplemental cover for boxes, the combination of a frame carrying a transparent plate, a support at the rear of the same, pins carried by said support, and box-lid engaging members slidably mounted With respect to said support and slotted for the passage of said pins.
10. The combination of a supplemental cover for boxes,-supporting means at the rear of the same, pins caried by said support, and box-lid embracing members slidably mounted With respect to said support and slotted for the passage of said pins, and guiding means for said members carried by the supporting means.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
EDWARD REUKAUF.
