I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. WEGENER,

a citizen of the United'States, residing at Beiseker, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i 1

This invention relates to improvements in hat pin guards or shields and the object thereof is to provide a simply constructed and eflicient device of this character which, while securely locking the pin in position in the hat, will also protect the point thereof and prevent all possibility of injury being inflicted thereby on surrounding objects or persons.

With this and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hat pin equipped with this improved guard; Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section through the guard; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 38 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the locking element detached; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.

In the embodiment illustrated a hat pin 1 is shown of ordinary construction equipped with the usual head 2 and having a penetrating point 3. Detachably mounted on this penetrating point 3 is a protective shield or guard here shown in the form of a casing 4 which is reduced at one end to form a housing 5, the latter being square-shaped in cross section and provided with a bore 6 extending longitudinally thereof and designed to receive and house the point of the pin. This pin is provided at apoint spaced inwardly from its point with a transverse aperture 7 which is designed to be disposed within the housing 5 of the guard when in operative position and to receive a locking element here shown in the form of a straight shank 9 which is provided with a longitudinallyextending slot 10 for slidable engagement with a pin 11, whereby said shank may be moved.

end of the shank 9 is extended through an opening 8 in one side of the housing 5 and is provided with a finger knob or head 14, the other end of the shank 9 being bent in the form of a U to provide a hook 12 for engagement withthe aforesaid aperture 7 in the pin 1. Mounted on this shank 9 is a coiled spring 13 which is disposed between the head '14 of the shank and the pin 11 and which exerts its tension to nor mally hold the point of the hook 12 in locking engagement with the aperture in the pin. WVhen it is desired to disengage the pin from the locking element, the head 14: thereof is'pressed inwardly against the tension of the spring 13 thereby forcing said hook 12 away from the pin and out of engagem'ent with the aperture therein to provide for the ready removal of the pin.

In the use of the device when it is desired to insert a pin in ahat, the guard is first disengaged therefrom and after the pin has been passed'through the hat and hair'of the wearer, the guard is replaced on the point thereof, the bore of the guard, the aperture in the pin, and the locking element being so positioned that when the pin has reached its extreme inner position within the guard, the hook-shaped portion of the element will be disposed opposite the aperture 7 in the pin and will thus readil snap into said aperture and securely loc the guard on the pin, which will eifectivelyprevent all possibility of the pin becoming detached from the hat and also completely house the point thereof to afiord protection to persons and objects with which it might come into contact.

While the device is shown and described in connection with a hat pin, it is obvious that it may be employed as a guard for a scarf or other pin, forming a safety attachment for preventing the loss of such a pin by the disconnection of the pin from its catch.
