SPRING GLOBE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IIARRY H. HIPwnLL and HARRY T. HIrwnLL, citizens of the United States, residing at N. S. Pittsburgh,
in the county of Allegheny, State of Penn sylvania, have invented a new and useful Spring Globe-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for holding a globe in an inverted position.
The present invention aims to improve the construction of the globe grip, so that, when the resilient ends of the grip are re leased, the grip will be centralized with respect to the support.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which willappear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understcod that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
' n the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation; Fig. 2
is a side elevation showing a different portion of the structure from that depicted in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is fragmental bottom plan, the grip being expanded; Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the grip partly contracted; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan showing the grip fully contracted; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the grip.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a support 1 including a depending flange 2 having a slot 3 and provided with an opening 4- disposed opposite to the slot 3, the opening 4 being somewhat longer than the slot 3.
The invention includes a globe grip 5 disposed within the flange 2, the globe grip 5 being fashioned from a resilient strip and being provided intermediate its extremities wlth a support engaging means in the form of a loop over terminally as shown at 7 to retain the globe grip inplace. The ends of the strip are flexed to form loops 8 which protrude 6 engaged in the slot 3 and bent throughthe opening at the loops 8 constituting finger pieces adapted to be pressed toward each other to effect an expansion of the resilient globe grip 5, the loops 8 terminating in diverging fingers 9 adapted to ride on the support at the ends of the opening at, when the loops 8 are released, thereby to carry the ends of the strip toward. the center of the support 1 and to centralize the grip 5 with respect to the support, the loops 8 including outer arms 10 disposed at an angle to the fingers 9 and defining recesses 11 which, codperating with the support at the ends of the opening 4:, limit the movement of the ends of the strip toward the center of the support 1 under the action of the fingers 9.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a support provided with an opening; and a globe grip located within the support, the globe grip being fashioned from a resilient strip provided intermediate its ends with support engaging means, the ends of the strip being ieXed to form loops which project through the opening, the loops constituting finger pieces, adapted to be pressed toward each other, to effect an expansion of the grip, the loops terminating in diverging fingers and including outer arms disposed at an angle to the fingers, the fingers and the outer arms cooperating to define approaching recesses; the fingers being adapted to ride on the support adjacent the ends of the opening, when the loops are released, to carry the ends of the strip toward the center of the support and to centralize the grip with respect to the support, the recesses cooperating with the support at the ends of the opening,
the action of the fingers, and the fingers co acting continuously with the support at the ends of the opening, when the loops are released, to guide the recesses into support engaging positions.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY H. HIPWELL. HARRY T. HIPWELL. Vitnesses EDWARD G. Lone, E. N. HIPWELL.
