Description
No. 814,566. PATENTED MAR. 6, 1906. W. J. SNOW.
LAMP CHIMNEY HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV.20,1905.
qxmmwaw viz/M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM JASPER SNOW,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Vilonia, in the county of Faulkner and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Chimney Holders and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp-chimney holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to be formed on or applied to a burner to securely hold the chimney in place.
A further object is to provide means whereby the holding mechanism may be spread apart to facilitate the application or removal of the chimney from the urner.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arran ement of parts, as will be hereinafter descri ed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner and chimney constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, showing in dotted lines the manner of releasing a chimney from the holding de-' vice. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the burner, showing in full and dotted lines the position of the holding device when the latter is in and out of engagement with the chimney; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through a burner, showing the application of a modified form of holding device made separate from the burner and attached thereto.
Referring moreparticularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the burner, which may be of any suitable construction. On the flange of the burner 1 are arranged upwardly-projecting spring chimneyengaging tongues 2, which are adapted to engage the outer side of a chimney when placed on the burner.
Arranged above the burner are oppositelydisposed semicircular shaped spring metal rods 3, which in cross-section ma be round or flat, as desired. The ends of.- t e semicircular rods 3 are bent laterally and then downwardly to form attaching-arms 4, the lower ends of which are formed into coiled springs 5 and are then passed through and secured Specification of Letters Patent.
' 4 are upwardly-projecting posts 6.
Patented March 6, 1906.
, Application filed November 20,1905. Serial No. 288,262-
to the under side of the burner-flange, as shown.
Secured to radial projections on the flange of the burner at diametrically opposite points and adjacent to the space between the arms On the posts 6 are pivotally mounted elliptical or cam-shaped spreading-blocks 7, which are disposed between the arms 4 and preferably have formed in their edges grooves 8, engaged by the arms 4, as shown. Formed on or secured to the opposite ends of the pivots of the blocks 7 are flattened heads 9', adapted to be engaged by the thumb and turn the blocks 7 in said posts. When the blocks 7 are turned to bring the longest diameter into engagement with the arms 4, the latter, together with the spring-rods 3, will be spread apart, thereby facilitating the application of and the removal of a chimney from the burner.
In Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings the device is shown as being attached directly to the burner and applied thereto in the manufacture of the same. In Fig. 4 of the drawings the device is shown in the form of an attachment and when so constructed is adapted to be applied to burners already manufactured. In this latter form of device the holding mechanism is formed on or attached to a supplemental flange 10, which is secured to the flange of the burner by means of tongues 12, adapted to be bent downwardly and inwardly into engagement with the opposite edges of the burner-flange, as shown.
A lamp-chimney holder constructed as herein shown and described will securely hold the chimney place when the lamp is tilted or upset. In order to more securely hold the chimney, the latter may be provided adjacent to its lower end with an annular groove 13, with which the semicircular sprin -rods 3 are adapted to be engaged, there y aifording a more secure engagement between said rods and chimney.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages ofthis invention.
finger to Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A lamp-chimney holder comprising a series of upwardly-projecting spring chimney-engaging tongues arranged on the flange of the burner, semicircular spring holdingrods secured on said flange to engage a groove in said chimney, upwardly-projecting posts arranged at diametrically opposite points on the burner, cam-blocks pivotally mounted on said posts and between the downwardly-turned ends of said spring holding-rods, and means to turn said cam-blocks to cause the same to spread said arms, substantially as described.
2. A lamp-chimney holder comprising a series of upwardly-projecting spring-tongues, semicircular spring-metal chimney-holding rods having downwardly bent attachingarms; coil-springs formed at the lower end of said arms, upwardly projecting posts, grooved cam-blocks pivotally mounted in said posts and disposed between said attachingarms, and heads arranged on said blocks whereby the latter are turned, substantially as described.
3. A lamp-chimney holder comprising an attaching-flange having securing tongues or lugs adapted to be bent into engagement with a burner-flange, a series of upwardly-projecting spring-tongues, semicircular spring-metal chimney -holding rods having downwardlybent attaching-arms, coil-springs formed at the lower end of said arms, upwardly projecting posts, grooved cam-blocks pivotally mounted in said posts and disposed between said attaching-arms, and heads arranged on said blocks whereby the latter are turned,
- substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM JASPER SNOW.
