'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. YOUNG, a
citizen of the United States, residing at matically locked and held against opening.
A further object is the production of a device in which a complete closure is formed without liability to its dropping open.
A further object is the production of a device of simple construction, one that can be cheaply manufactured and one not liable to disarrangement of parts.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by my device, embodiments of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the side elevation of my improved swivel in open position, partly broken away; and
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a ring with parts broken away.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the swivel base, 2 the curved ring portion terminating in a reduced end 3 provided with an opening 4.
The chain support 5 carrying at its lower end a ring 6 is pivotally mounted on the swivel support at 7, the swivel closure 8 extending upwardly therefrom, and having a reduced portion 9 corresponding to the similar portion 3 on the ring, and carrying a pin 10 placed at the proper angle and being of a proper size to enter within the opening 4 when the swivel is closed.
In Fig. 2 the ring 11 is broken as shown at 12 and reduced at one end as shown at 13 and provided with an opening 14: within said reduced portion. A curved closure segment 15 is pivotally mounted at 16 on the opposite end of the ring, and provided with a reduced end 17 and a pin 18, the reduced portion and pin being adapted to register with the reduced portion and opening on the opposite end of the ring. A supporting link 19 is rigidly secured to the closure 15 near its pivotal point 16 and extending outwardly therefrom, adapted to engage the lower link of a chain 20. It will be noted that an upward pull on the chain 20 swings the closure 15 up against the reduced end 13 causing the pin 18 to enter within the opening 14 looking the link together. The configuration of the opening and pin is such that the pin when entering the opening springs the end slightly out locking the parts together against ordinary movement, or if desired, the joint at 16 may be made rather tight to prevent the closure from coming open,
In any event, however, as the link is supposed to have a watch or ornament 21 suspended at its lower end and to be supported at its upper end by the chain, it is practically always under tension, so there is little danger of its coming open unless it is forced open in order to remove the watch or ornament from the link. In order to open it it is simply necessary to press down on the lower link of the chain or on the supporting link 19, thus forcing the closure 15 back into the position shown in the figure, when the watch or ornament can he slipped off.
In the operation of the swivel shown in Fig. 1 the chain 22 is secured to the ring 6 and a downward pull on the chain swings the swivel arm 5 down to the point 7 until its back face 23 strikes the inner face 24 of the slot within the swivel base in which it travels. At the same time the swivel closure is forced forward causing the reduced portions 9 and 3 to come together forming a continuous surface and causing the pin 10 to enter the opening 4:. The pin and the opening may be so arranged as to require a slight pressure to cause the pin to enter the opening springing the end of the swivel outwardly and in a sense locking the members together, or in this construction the be easily efiected and make a somewhat more efiicient structure.
While I have illustrated my device as adapted to rings and swivels, other adaptations may be made without departing iron; thespirit of my invention.
