ment in Grapples,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grapples and more particularly to a friction grapple; the invention is particularly adapted foruse as a lifter for steel or other metal plates.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consistsin the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken online 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sideelevation with the parts in altered position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the corrugated roller employed. Fig. 6 is a perspective View or the release arm employed.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates the frame of the device having legs 2, 3; the inner side 4: of the leg 3 being straight and the inner side 5 of the leg 2 being inclined inwardly and downwardly toward the leg 3. The opposite end of the frame is provided with an eye 6, adapted to receive one link 7 of a lift chain, and with a bifurcated ear 8 in which one end of a release arm .9 is pivoted, said arm normally resting against the outer edge of the leg 2. A yoke 10 encircles Specification of Letters Patent.

the leg 2 and the release arm 9 and extends between the legs 2, 3 and carries a corrugated roller 11 adapted for frictional engagement with the inner or inclined edge of the leg 2 and with the plate or other. object 12 to be lifted. A transverse stop pin 13 extending through the leg 2 limits the movement of the yoke 10 in one direction and prevents its removal from said leg. I
In operation the legs 2, 3 are placed about the plate to be lifted, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the lift chain raised. The inclination of the inner edge of the leg 2 will force the roller 11 into frictlonal engagement with the plate 12 causing said roller to frictionally lock said plate in engagement with the leg 3 when the plate may be transported with the grapple. To release the plate 12 the release arm 9 is jerked upward or away from the leg 2 to cause it to engage the yoke 10 and raise it and the roller 11 thus freeing the plate.
What is claimed is A grapple comprising a frame terminating in legs, one leg being formed with an inner inclined edge, a yoke encircling said leg, a corrugated roller carried by said yoke between said legs, a stop pin for said yoke and a release arm pivotally carried by said frame and extending through said yoke.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aifixed our signatures in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
LEO RANDAL. EMIL SOLA.
