BELT-HANGING DEVICE...
SSPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,803, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed May 6, 1835. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'we, J OSEPH EAGLESTON and WILLIAM EAeLnsroN, both residing in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Hanging Apparatus; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved apparatus for adjusting belts upon drums or pulleys. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the device applied to a pulley in position for operation; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the latter, showing the device at the point at which it is automatically detached or removed from the pulley.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to a device for adjusting or facilitating the adjustment of belts and bands upon pulleys; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of Simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates a bail constructed of any suitable material, metal being preferred, and of a width between the arms which is equal to the width of the pulley to which it is to be applied for operation. Suitably attached to the end of one of the arms of the said bail is achain or rope, B, the end of which is provided with a ring or link, 0, which may be readily adjusted in a transverse notch, D, in the outer end of the other arm,E, of the bail. Said arm is also provided with a notch, F, at right angles to the notch D, and adapted to receive a hook or catch, G, formed upon one end of a lever or bell-crank, H, which is pivoted to the front side of the said arm E of the bail. The upper or inwardly extending arm I of the said bellcrank lever is extended under the body or central portion of the bail A, and has a laterallyextending lug or catch, J, bearing against the latter, so that the pressure of the belt upon the said lever, as will be presently described, will tend to hold the hook G in engagement with the notch F. The outer or short arm, K, of the bell-crank lever is provided with an inwardly-extending beveled arm,.L, the object of which will be presently described.
The operation of our invention is as follows: One end of the belt having been adjusted upon its pulley M, the upper half of the belt is adjusted upon the other pulley, N. The bail A is then placed on top of the belt and over the rim of the pulley, while the chain B is passed under the rim and connected with the notch D by means of the hook G. The weight of the bail A upon the inner arm of the bell-crank lever will keep the latter stationary, and thus prevent the ring at the end of the chain B from slipping out of the notch F. The belt being thus connected with or held upon the rim of the pulley, the latter may be turned, thus causing the belt to slip into position gradually and easily. WVhen about a one-half revolution of the pulley has been made, the rim of the pulley will bear against the beveled arm L of the bell-crank lever, causing the latter to be thrown open, so as to admit of the escape of the ring 0 from the notch F, when the device will be automatically detached and drop off from the pulley.
This device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and will be found exceedingly convenient for adjusting belts or bands upon their pulleys, especially such heavy belts as cannot otherwise be easily manipulated.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A device for adjusting belts upon pulleys, consisting of a bail, a chain connected to one arm of the same, and means for connecting the end of the said chain detachably with the end of the other arm of the said bail, substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
- 2. In a device for adjusting belts upon pulleys, the combination of a bail, a chain connected to the end of one of the arms of the I V I bail and having a link adapted'to enter a notch in the end of the other arm, and a bellcrank lever having a hook or catch adapted to retain the said chain-link in its notch, an inwardly-extending arm, and a beveledlatcharm, by contact of which with the rim of the pulley the device may be automatically detached from the latter, substantiallyas and for .the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto aflixed our signa- 'tures in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH nigennsron.
